MJH once told some folkies who asked how to do his guitar style,"use your thumb on the base string like this, then you got all these other fingers to do stuff with." the man was a blues master.

If you play guitar, learning John Hurt's tunes can be a challenge, not so much difficult as they are tricky. But once you get them down, they're fun to play and sing. Despite his focus on technique, he has a relaxed way of singing and playing that always please me, listening.

        One of my favorites:

If you like John Hurt, check out Reverend Gary Davis- "I'll be Alright" is a cool tune.

Congratulations, there are always more old (and new) artists, writers and musicians to discover, and one of John Hurt's stature is a delight.

Which comes first," someone asked Ira Gershwin, "the words or the music?" "The contract," said Gershwin.

I really like Mississippi John Hurt. Lightnin Hopkins is another if you haven't discovered him yet.

I like John Hurt. Thanks for the introduction Tom, I'll have to listen to more.

A small group of my college friends and I truly loved southern rock. A few of us leaned toward the country side including the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. And while their version of Mr Bojangles was truly great, the gospel is Jerry Jeff's.

                Cheers,

                Bobby

Where have you been? You certainly have heard his music as you will soon find out. Quite an influence. Chip-skiff put the original up. Here is the one that led me to John Hurt and another one Doc Watson did.

Thumbpick and four fingerpicks. By contrast, Gary Davis used just his thumb and index finger.

BTW, John Sabastian is playing the guitar for Maria M. on that number, his band, "Lovin Spoonful" took their name from John Hurt's Coffee Blues Lyrics.
