I guess that's how they normally do it. It looked like the chain was moving awfully fast, but the crew was able to stop it, so it must have been under control.

FWIW, the old RCN steamers had enclosed cable decks. The noise, vibration and rust particles in the air (and in our lungs!) when lowering the anchor defies description.

I would say not. When the chain stopped it had jumped the gypsy and was lying at 45 degrees off line. The operators had retired to a "safe" distance too. Everything is newly painted so this was probably a test of a new boats system.
