Its about the size that kills most people.... a 14'er... they tend to get booted by the bigger crocs and go looking for new territory

That blue is a dead giveaway.

I saw a lot of birds today with irridescent blues and greens, but no others that size. Well... some bigger, but not with the blue

I know I shouldn't.... but this one reminds me of a forumite

I've seen five or six of these in the wild, but couldn't get a shot of them. Fascinating birds.

Southern Cassowary, Casuarius casuarius.

They called it the Double Wattled Cassowary..... with its range being around PNG and northern Oz, I'd always thought these sort of things belonged a bit lower though...

Well if ya stand still for a moment to close to its nest you'll be wishing the darn thing was a bit higher. these baggers are known for killing folks. that helmet may look ornamental but it and those feet are serious artillery. I want a pair for guard critters.

Oh well I'm too late, but, just in case you were wondering...

As for eating the Cassowary, it is supposed to be quite tough. Australian administrative officers stationed in New Guinea were advised that it "should be cooked with a stone in the pot: when the stone is ready to eat so is the Cassowary".

There was an excellent program in the series "Inside Natures Giants" on dissecting one. Its anatomy is almost identical to a small dinosaur, not just those lethal feet, but hollow bones with air sacks and lots of other similarities.

true with most birds
Hollow bones..flight
feathers...scales
reproductive organs
eggs.
ability to change the sex of an individual
air sacs
to mention a few.

Incidentally, I touched the feathers and they are quite hard... and the bird very solid. The whole bony thing on the head is for pushing through thick jungle. The only confirmed death from a Cassowary that I can recall reading about was a 12 year old boy, nearly 100 years ago. The bird struck him and severed an artery in the neck. There's plenty of them up in Far North Queensland.

But who'd have thought that a ground living predatory lizard would have needed air sacs in its bones?

Thanks Brian. I was having a bit of fun there. I'd have liked to get through the wire in a couple of the aviaries. I went there because I wanted to see the Hornbills up close. Having seen them fly by - out of range - a few times.

Here's an interesting little fellow... a small white cockatoo with an orange crest

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff112/igatenby/Malaysia%20and%20Thailand%20by%20Super%20Enduro/228.jpg

and a Brahiminy Kite (did I spell that right?). I've seen them in Oz and in Asia

A couple of those small Scops Owls and that little Cockatoo again. There was a young Tamil kid there bashing them with a stick. I told him to stop. Caught him again and yelled at him. Embarassed his parents... which was my intention... and they hurried him off. Little prick. He was flogging the birds.

I'm heading off to Lake Kenyir.... the resort there bills itself ('scuse the pun) as the Home of the Hornbills.

I'm seriously undergunned... with only 200mm in the bag, but I'll give it a shot.
