Dylan's written a lot about freedom, but the connection to basketball coaching escapes me.

For the most part, and Chad can assist here, it was her coaching style on the court and off especially regarding an emphasis on education. If I'm not wrong every team player she had graduated.
Donn, I picked up cspan in the middle. There was a Japanese man who fought against the camps in WW2, An author, and as you say about 13 recipients.

Thanks Jamie - I didn't see anything about that in the wikipedia article on her but if she was more than just a winning coach that would make some sense.

Confirm this with Chad. This is what I have pieced together.

Donn. When she announced her semi retirement and this bit about all of her students graduating was mentioned was, I think, true. She still coaches at a lesser capacity and there may be a few who have not finished this year yet. There appears to be a lot of flexibily in awarding this medal as well.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is an award bestowed by the President of the United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/President_of_the_United_States) and is—along with the comparable Congressional Gold Medal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Congressional_Gold_Medal) bestowed by an act of U.S. Congress (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Congress)—the highest civilian award (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civilian_decorations_of_the_United_States) in theUnited States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States). It recognizes those individuals who have made "an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors".[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presidential_Medal_of_Freedom#cite_note-2) The award is not limited to U.S. citizens (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citizenship) and, while it is a civilian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civilian) award, it can also be awarded to military (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military) personnel and worn on the uniform (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_uniform).
I've had the pleasure of working and knowing one recipient from 1966 to his death on an irregular basis and he painted birds.

Bob Dylan and Pat Summitt (U. Tennessee Womens Basketball Coach) were among 13 recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom yesterday.

Thank you.... My decoder ring battery must have died....

Read it again:

I have to confess I just kind of skimmed through it, and that was lost in an interminable review of season results.
