So some dude jumped off the platform at Niagra Falls yesterday, and survived!

Its estimated that he hit the water at 70 mph!

There's a quite interesting group of suicide survivors by jumping. They almost all relate that the moment they let go the railing two thoughts flashed through their minds. "This is a really bad idea" :d and "nothing is so bad in my life that this the solution for it"

where's the 'platform'?

I believe the photograph was taken from the platform.

There's been a number of suicides there. Not so much a lover's leap as it is convenient to the casino where some have lost a lot of money.

I have no use for casinos...I live close to several, both in Michigan and in Alabama, and have been maybe once in the last four years or so. I went to Biloxi many years ago with a friend that started the night with $300.00 and ended with over $25,000.00! That was fun.:D

As a kid, I lived at Niagara Falls. At times, there was a brisk trade in body recovery, for folks who worked on the "Maid of the Mist." Beautiful falls ... seedy city.

Awesome! Kat and I are stopping there on our way back from Mystic.:DIf you get tired of seedy, try Niagara on the Lake, a little village on the Canadian side that's as beautiful as any place I've seen.

Niagara. A place of wonders...big and small.Experience the world wonder of Niagara Falls. Stroll the streets of the small town wonder that is
Niagara-on-the-Lake. Or discover our wonderful wineries, spas, attractions, dining and casinos.
Whatever wonders you choose, Niagara is your getaway destination for family fun or a couples escape.

Awesome! Kat and I are stopping there on our way back from Mystic.:DEnjoy! At one time, NF claimed that it was the "honeymoon capital" of North America. Dunno if that was true - but there sure were a bunch of folks who went for the honeymoon, then (like in Vegas) looked around for someone to marry them. Unlike in Vegas, the local laws don't easily facilitate that, or didn't back in the 70s at least.

I used to have to walk to and from school past a pool hall where there'd often be about 20 choppers lined up. Mostly Harleys, but also a few Triumph, Nortons, etc. Eye candy for a kid, but not the safest route to walk. Thanks to tourism, Niagara Falls was home to a pretty lucrative drug and prostitution trade in those days, with a couple of gangs vying for part of the business.

Tethered. I could do that.

Jumped or pushed?

This reminds me of the equivalence of gravity and acceleration according to General Relativity theory. The general rule is that in order to be considered to be accelerating one must feel a gravitational force. So according to GR the people standing on the platform are the ones accelerating, because they experience the force of gravity (the platform pushing up against their feet, or their feet pushing down against the platform). But the guy hurling towards the water below is not accelerating because he is experiencing weightlessness, or nearly so, in what appears to those on the platform - the ones actually accelerating - to be accelerating free fall. Gawd I love science.

Vince, just give me an etch-a-sketch and high school algebra and we could go all the way to the presidency.

Here's your secretary of state. He will impress everyone, and they'll know you mean business and are not to be trifled with.

That can be dangerous luck, you might decide you're "lucky" and loose the house..... and your life.:(
