Hi All,

My first posting so here goes... I am building a 23 foot dory based on lines taken from a Marblehead dory recorded by Chapelle in 1935. I am finishin off the fairing and will soon be planking. My question is, because this dory is somewhat "slab" sided, do I have to spile the planking, or can I hang the garboard and each consecutive plank and just trace out its shape for cutting. I've heard of others using this method but am still unclear as to whether it will work. Thanks in advance.

Hang the plank and trace out the shape for cutting=spiling in this case. Go for it. The shape of the upper edge might well be straight, even the sheer.

Thanks, Thad. It seems straight forward enough to hang the plank and trace the concave curve of the garboard using the chine (or opposite the chine). Should I space the 4 planks evenly at the centerline of the boat?
