Love this boat. Has anybody thought of building one yet?

Have you compared it to #107, "SKYLARK" which has been built?

OOPS! Sorry, very different boats.

No, I haven't compared it to Skylark which is also another design of Paul's that I like. #130 is even more appealing to me though. It strikes me as an excellent canidate for a racing class. Simple rig, straitforward building, and exciting performance. Somebody should make this design a kit. (With Paul's blessing of course)

You did say Design #130, right?

Traditional clinker construction, riveted planks, steamed ribs. Very similar to Skylark, almost a foot less beam to make rowing easier. Nice boat. Simple and kit form, I doubt it. You must be thinking of another design.

Actually, that's the correct design. The rig is simple and, the construction simplistic. (meaning no motors, batteries ,no deckbeams, no carlins no coamings, no fillets, no fiberglass and epoxy sheathing etc. etc. There is no reason a design like this can't be made into a kit. A real classy kit would have full size computer lofting on mylar and a stack of real wood and fasteners. An intermediate level kit could consist of pre cut plywood parts. Obviously, this would not be a kit for beginers. I just think there are enough people out there that are ready for a kit like this.

Well, has anybody? It's been seven years.

I'm interested because I thought of building Gartside #107, SKYLARK, but then realized it is very heavy, 550lbs - too much to handle out of the water. Then I lit on the rather similar #130, only 180lbs. But wait - how come it only weighs a third? It is 2ft shorter, yes, but the construction seems to be the same, lapstrake on bent frames.

Well, in response to the seven year old question, I certainly thought about building one for a long time, and have now practically finished her. Launched last year, but have not got round to doing the mast yet.

The Herreshoff Coquina was offered here as a kit for a while but it seems to be no longer available. So maybe demand for kits for multiplank traditionally built boats isn't great enough to justify: http://www.dhylanboats.com/coquina_kits_hulls.html
