Newark Mayor Cory Booker was recovering from minor injuries after he rushed into a burning building near his home Thursday and saved a trapped neighbor — a moment of spontaneous heroism during which the mayor feared for his life.“

It was pretty touch and go. When we climbed the stairs something exploded,” Booker said Friday, with his hand wrapped in bandages as a result of burns suffered in the rescue. “I had very clear thoughts that I wouldn’t get out of this place alive.”

The 42-year-old mayor of New Jersey’s largest city was returning home from a television interview Thursday night when he found the two-story house on fire. One of the residents screamed that her daughter was still trapped inside the building on Hawthorne Avenue. The house was full of smoke and the fire grew more intense as Booker entered the home, he recalled on Friday.

The trapped woman yelled, and the mayor he ran up the stairs to find her.Booker scooped up the woman from her bed, threw her over his shoulders and “punched” through the flames in the kitchen, he said.

Simpler is better. Anyway, guy reminds me of our Mayor Flynn driving the snow plow trucks, holding a fire hose, anything.
