Thanks Gaz. Those planter boxes have solved a problem for me already. My backyard is pretty small and rather bare atm. There isn't the room for a normal garden bed and I've been trying to figure out how to add some greenery for a while.
There are some great ideas in your link for other projects too. The bike racks are just what the local bike co-op needs.

I like it. They make OK kindling too.

Not nearly as creative, but they make an excellent platform to stack firewood or hay on. It would be an excercise in scarfing and cold molding and especially patience but it would fun to build a small boat from salvaged pallets.

I like the hay feeder and the seedling planter.

I use old pallets at the bottom of my compost pile to help it breathe.

They make excellent containers for a 3 bay compost system.

I think they are all ugly as hell. If all I had to work with was an old pallet, I think I wouldn't build anything.

I think it's already been done.

I think the word rustic applies nicely. I don't know if I would call all of them ugly... I think it's more about the outcome rather than the act.

I find the real beauty is in taking something otherwise useless and through some creative thought, repurposing it. I admire ingenuity.

Twenty-some years ago, they used to ship motorcycles on pallets of tropical hardwood, much longer than the standard size (and dump them). I framed my first greenhouse with the wood and used it in other projects. And the scraps kept my shop warm.

On the other hand, a rich nutter hired me to build horse corrals out of salvage pallets, by attaching them to posts with a steel banding machine, which was a severe butt-cramp. It cost him far more in labor than if I'd built a corral with treated pine posts and lodgepole rails, and it looked like crap.

I liked the cycle rack and the room divider, but that would need some fairly tidy pallets to start with.

All the staging in my (partner's) greenhouse is made from pallets.

Yeppers. Everything looks the same, like a bunch of pallets. ;)
