I am sistering ribs in my 1935 Richardson Cruisabout. The screws that I have removed from the hull vary in size, possibly from a refit or some replanking below the water line. The bottom of the hull seems to have #14 x 1 1/2 screws through the 7/8 inch Cypress planking into the 1 1/4 x 1 1/8 white oak ribs. Above the waterline there is a combination of #8, #10, and #12 x 1 1/2" screws, all are silicon bronze.

When sistering the old ribs with new ribs of the same dimension, is there a guide as to the proper size screw to use? My gut tells me that #8 is too small for the size planking I have, and anything larger than #12 may be weakening the rib a bit?

According to Skene's Elements of Yacht Design, you should use #12's in 7/8th planking.
