A boy left his bike up against the tree when he went away to War in 1914... and he never came back.

Makes the picture more poignant really

On Vashon Island (near Seattle, Washington), a tree grows carrying a rather unusual passenger - an old bike. Apparently some kid chained a bike to the tree decades ago and never picked it up, leaving the tree no choice but to grow around the bike.

The tree and island gained some level of notoriety when Berkeley Breathed, creator of Bloom County, wrote a children's book inspired by the bicycle eating tree entitled Red Ranger Came Calling.

Very cool, but it can't have been 1914; that bike's not nearly old enough. '50s or '60s is my bet. Besides, the US didn't enter WWI until 1917.

Interesting photo..I don't know, the bike looks a little short for an adult going to war. Also it appears to be a girl's bike. But anyway, nice story and adds flavor and and adds to the mystery as to who it might have belonged to and why the person left it.The links failed to open. Almost better in a way not being able to open them. Keeps me wondering and guessing.:)

Also I don't think things move up the tree, it stays where it was placed , the tree grows around it , but the thing does not move up as the tree grows. So unless he chained it to the tree 4 or 5 feet off the ground it could be true , except for the other things people have said about it.

I do know where pair of goalie skates are located in a tree on Steere Street in Harrisville , RI if anyone's interested in them!

bs,

I'm sorry... as usual, you've got the facts wrong. I'm not saying the bike doesn't exist. It does. My wife worked as a consulting minister on Vashon, and we visited the "Bicycle Tree". But most of the rest of your story is, well... just a nice story (but not true):

A true friend wouldn't even let you come here and play with these nasty, nasty, people! Look at how you're treated here. Oh, sure... they laugh at your bon mots of absurdity. But any time you try and get serious about some topic, they insist on bringing up those nasty old 'facts'. It's an outrage, I say.

Does morning coffee count? I could put brandy in it like my grannie.
Doesn't matter what story is 'true' it's one of those pics you show to year 5's and 6's in a creative writing class.

I'd have to say it's a Western Flyer from the early 50s, that would be Korea. Great story!

I suppose something as iconic as the bike tree had to end up being used in someone's myth.

There is a problem with this story....God has not been invoked in the legend :D

Sorry Bobbys.
When I was a kid and went for sunday drives with my Methodist Aunty, every unusual feature in the landscape was attributed to some message from the big guy.

A big rock was "the lion and the lamb" a tree with old Ivy grown on the stem in a cross was "the easter tree"

I'm wondering what she would have said about the bicycle tree. :D
