Hmm. looks like he rounded the mark 5 seconds before it was placed. Fast boat or slow officials.........

Trick lens and a long overhang ,but that was close.Plenty of clearance on the nose pole.

Just fine. Normal boat handling. Those who can't do this safely need to practice with, as here, rubber objects.

Where I grew up, there's a harbour wall, the current runs parallel to it and if the wind and tide are together it necessitates getting in really close on your tacks, touching the wall with the corner of the transom is normal. A friend sailing a Hornet, a fairly narrow dinghy with a long tiller, roll tacked close to the wall, caught his tiller between two of the granite blocks, unfortunately his rudder hardware was well attached, he ripped the transom out of the boat; now that's close tacking.

After midnight I usually resort to close tacking to make it through the exit door of the local bar.

I can't see it here at work, but for us sailing close to other boats is the norm and I can't tell you how many times in a normal day I will pass within a foot of another boat.

I agree this is just plain stupid.

If you want to risk your own life ok, but do not risk the life of others.

Just practising pre-start time on distance with a coach boat. No biggie.

I think you two need to spend some more time sailing

Great scene, great move. Note the coach boat gal hardly gave a second glance. It's what racers do, and this one did it well.

they've obviously never run a gate start boat!

That's just racing - nothing special... But nicely done!
My Dad had me practice tacking on a river with hard pilings on each bank. Set a series of matchboxes overhanging the piling edge. Then tack the reach, using the quarter-wave lifting the stern to knock the matchbox off... Without making contact with the pilings. After a day of that, you hardly even look back to see if you have done it.

Sometimes I think that the most exciting part of the race is the lead-up to the start.

It can get awfully crowded behind that start line.

RC was late in getting a mark set. The skipper did the only thing he could to avoid a protest in getting as close as possible to where the mark should be. Might still be liable to protest for not rounding the mark properly but I am with him. Not going to wait around for the RC to do their job. I agree that it looks like a telephoto shot anyway. Those thinking getting close is stupid would not be happy on my boat.

For the extra ten seconds of sailing time, I'd have gone around the mark boat and eliminated any potential for protest.

All racing-sailor's bravado aside, it WAS a close tack. The starboard quarter would've thrown a shadow on the RIB at noon.

All powerboater's indignance aside, the RIB could have cleared away anytime they felt the urge.

Were they racing? I don't see another sailboat in sight. If they were racing, they certainly would have rounded the tender or be protested. Strange.

I've been in a few races where the committee boat was on the favored end of the line during starts. Lots of frayed nerves there!

It's clearly a telephoto shot, as you can see if you count off the seconds for the wake to get to the boat, but it's still a nice tack. The people who are upset about it clearly don't sail with any elan and also don't know how to look at a video.
