took a nice ride with a friend this AM. Things are looking up... a very little bit of hobby-horse bucking and I won... good for me and good for the horse. Over the hill and through the woods; just the way I used to like it when "I wore a younger man's clothes".

there was a little girl (and her dad) who got all excited about my muddy boots and she told me all about her riding and jumping... she was maybe 8 or 10 years old... neato!

You ain't no cowboy!
You're a horseman...same as me!
I could write a book on the differences between cowboys and horsemen.
At first glance you see the difference in the names...cowBOY...horseMAN!
Some of my best companions over the years have been horses I got to know and who got to know me.
I think you're on the right track, Phillip, you just need to do more of it.
The soreness will go away for you and the horse if you keep at it.

Good onyer mate! I did eventing (jumps) for 10 years (until I turned 43). Nothing so fine as commanding a fine steed!
