Have you heard the news? A whole bunch of brand new WW II, U.S. Army jeeps were recently found in a warehouse. They're still in crates, packed in cosmoline. The Army doesn't want them now because they have newer vehicles, so they're selling them for fifty dollars each. So show up for the sale next Saturday!

I did buy a crate full of MCs from WW2 in Spring Valley NY in 1971
Not allowed to open it it was 375.00.
I got 6 Triumph single cyl British MCs from WW2.
5 had compression and my buddies bought 3 giving mine for free.
I thought i was getting Harley's.
It was a All surplus place, no jeeps even then..
Bikes had gun holders wish i had a couple , I left mine in a barn and it was stolen , We had trouble with the wiring.

Well, you gotta know the right guys...my uncle's coworker says that it's his sister's, brother-in-law, who has a dentist, who was cleaning the teeth of a retired supply Sgt., who had some buddies who were still in the service, who knew how to get the crated jeeps for $50.

1966. I was stationed in Monterey, CA. Two guys drove to a government surplus auction at the Oak Knoll complex near Oakland. They came back with a crated Harley Davidson. I believe it was a late 50s Sportster sized bike in Air Force blue. Don't remember what they paid, but it was well below the price of a Honda 50 of the time.

That was weird. I read Brian's post and thought "That's not Emily's usual area of expertise".

Except in Ho Chi Minh City, where they turn them into street rods.

Oh... let me rephrase that then...
The finding, advertising, and selling of surplus military industrial complex phallic symbols damages the environment and gaia herself by encouraging our weak and undeserving species to breed more children...

My grandfather bought two Harleys as war surplus in the late 1940's for, as I remember it, five pounds in the crate. Army drab, gate gears, tractor seats and both with a sidecar chassis included. He fitted one with a big box for carting hay, sheep, wood etc. The other was used to get about the farm, I couldn't lift it if it fell over till I was 13 or so, couldn't kick start it till I was 15 I think. I would go fishing on it and leave it running leaning against a tree.

I have an M38a1..... Paid a little more than $50, but still a good deal.
I looked into those Jeeps you used to see for sale on the back cover of Marvel Comics.....
They'd been cut up with a torch, and the blocks smashed..... What a waste.

When I was a kid, we all talked about the supposed motorcycles, WWII surplus, packed in cosmoline and available for $50.... I always thought it was an urban legend, myself, but my friends all dreamed about getting one. Perhaps it wasn't necessarily a legend... although we had no idea, in the 60's, how or where they could be gotten.

Warning: Thread drift.
Thinking of Emily [#10]: BrianW, I love the logo.
I had a great friend up in Boston, a Republican appointee in our DPU office, who was very active in Republican party politics. I was not a Democratic party activist but I was involved in other politics. When she and I had our separate after-work political meetings we’d go warm up at the Red Hat where we so enjoyed our pre-meeting scotch and beers that we each missed our meetings. We each claimed credit for keeping an opposing activist from his or her appointed task. Not to mention laying the foundation for so many rumors the truth or falsehood of which will not be addressed.
That's my kind of politics.
