I think I have made a great discovery

At this time of year I usually expect to put on a few pounds due to inactivity

But I have discovered that since I started sailing the duck punt twice a week - even on a tiny stretch of water - my trousrs have started to get gratifyingly rooomy

don't get me wrong - but I might have discovered a new fitness regime

it beats going to the jim or a run

sailing a boat that requires you to lay down when sailing is not the obvious ideal for the basis of a fitness regime.

However, if you watch the film it requires a lot of movement and all the time you are sailing you are crunching your abbs and tensing your arse

hence the trouser fit.

I am thinking of setting up an entirely free digital fitness clinic based around this quick to build slab sided pointy ended coffin sized vessel that is so challenging yet so rewarding to sail.

I think I might get buried in mine - I fancy a a fifteen foot long coffin

The first excercise is to lay down on the floor somewhere you can see a computer screen and crunch your abbs every time you see the ugly old bloke in the film crunches his.

then there is the second level where you build the boat in sevene days

then you sail it, lift it onto the roof of the old car. It has to be an old ccar because it must not be a car that you love more than the boat

There is a punt sailor called lurch who posts some great films about punting

in west mersea they punt in small herds of men

http://youtu.be/LZ3hLPJn_xA

http://youtu.be/wZ0KwXBUEjY

and then there is this great film of blokes standing up to punt them through the misty salt marshes of the Blackwater

http://youtu.be/hHm65VuUvYU

Mine has lived on the roof of the polo - or old green car as it is lovingly called in this house - it has picked up a few more dings and scratches

these blokes make films about their punts called I love my duck punt

so if anyone out there would like to come up with a name for this old sailors fitness regime

something that includes the word punt or duck

Incidentally I have been accused of creating a travesty of a duck punt - wrong colour sails, wrong paint, wrong wood, wrong weight, wrong shape

Guilty as charged

It sails like a witch though and I am loving every minute of it

Dylan - you have not created "a travesty of a duck punt - wrong colour sails, wrong paint, wrong wood.". You have just modernised the construction and used available materials, all very sustainable, very green and a shining example of what is called upcycling these days. BTW like the films although it must have been just a bit parky on the river.

I think it shows that the simple hull shape and cheap recycled rig shows that it is a good combination

I needed mine to be as light and as cheap and as transportable as possible

I am assured that you can also car top a traditional duck punt

but I have a small car and no roof rack

I have never had a boat I have enjoyed sailing as much as this

It was cold -- the sun is shining - the wind is blowing - but I was outside -

time goes so fast when you are sailing

a day goes past in a flicker

as for sailing in the winter

the boats need flat water - sailing the thames in summer in one would be tough because of the amount of other river traffic

I assume they swamp pretty easily - hence my fender floats

lots of layers - a quick paddle warms you up

my hands are pretty cold tolerant

feet suffered some-what so need something warmer

some sort of insulated welly

never felt fitter though

I really thin you should

in the film you can see that the old Oppie sail is very tired but it really pushes you along

Flo mo has made a stitch and glue version and a bloke in North Norfolk with an epoxy allergy is making one using cascamite and screws

if you like sailing you will enjoy making one of these things sail

they move in very little breeze and require very little water

it is like micro-cruising

building the boat was such a cynch

You're a multi-talented fellow, Dylan. First, you were counselling boat addicts, and now you've given us a fitness/weight-loss plan! Very impressive!

Dear Tom,

the crack team of medical experts here at the DPTC - Duck Punt Therapy centre - have discovered a wide range of benefits that accrue to elderly large men from the ownership of these simple fitness machines.

incidentally one more spin off from the Duck Punt is that it can really improve your sex life. Many of our clients have discovered that their libido has improved dramatically as a result of all this supine physical activity. In a recent survey by our in house DP research team we exposed several women to images of Duck Punt sailors and ordinary people and discovered that DP sailors are in fact more attracctive than the average guy. This also applies to gay DP sailors.

In a recent breakthrough we have also discovered that hair grows faster while DP sailing than when sailing ordinary boats.

Keep your eyes open for a new string of franchised Duck Punt Hair clinics which will be spreading across high streets around the World. As luck would have it we have a franchise available in your area - please PM me for details of how you can climb aboard this band wagon

the men sailing in this film are all well into their 80's now and medical tests suggest that they are in such good shape that most of them should still be sailing when they are 100 years old.

so the benefits of duck punt sailiing are immense

lose weight, have more sex, gow more hair and live longer

few other boats can offer these benefits

Please apply for one of our franchises as soon as possible

we offer you exclusive rights to run a clinic in a 25 mile radius of your home

Yeah, I was wondering too seeing Joe isn't about. Does it apply to kaftans? A cheesecloth kaftan and a big hat are wonderful sun protection when paddling a canoe in the sun for several days. But seeing I already sail a canoe I guess I don't need a punt.
