According to the Gartner Group (http://www.gartner.com/it/page.jsp?id=1893523#), US shipments of "desk-based PCs, mobile PCs, including mini-notebooks but not media tablets such as the iPad" in the 4th quarter of 2011 decreased 5.9% over the same quarter of the previous year (2010), while Apple's shipments of Mac's grew 20.7%.

However, Apple is included in the total. If you do the math to compare Apples to Wintel Oranges :D, Apple shipped 20.7% more PCs while the Wintel alliance shipped 8.5% fewer PCs.

That's got to hurt.

Perhaps a little less of a problem than it might appear at first glance.

A fair number of the macs will have a copy of windows so that the user can run windows apps - though how long that will last remains to be seen.

The 'experts' are proclaiming the end of the desktop and laptop machines, just like they've been doing for a few years.

I'll wait and see.
