I have heard and read wonderful things about Iain Oughtred's designs, especially the various double ended boats. However, except for one Caledonia yawl that was in pretty bad condition, I've never had a chance to sail one. I live in Pittsburgh, PA - does anybody know where I might go to find and hopefully sail any of Oughtred's boats (short of flying to Scotland or New Zealand!)? I'm particularly interested in the gaff/gunter rigs for good upwind performance. I'd love to see an actual boat before committing the time and money to build one.
Thanks much,
Garth

Contact Mike Kiefer at:

He has one that he modified - longer and higher strakes. A very very impressive boat. Incredibly seaworthy looking and I only saw it on the trailer!

Sailed in company with Mr. Kiefer's boat last summer. Very nicely done, roomy, and a looker.
I hope you find someone closer to Pittsburgh than South Haven, MI.

St. Michaels, Maryland Wooden Boat Festival attracts a handful of Iain's designs. First weekend in October, I think.
Or, you could go to Maine, Vermont, Virginia, Louisiana, Washington, Massachusetts, Indiana...
