Geez guys, thanks! Didn't realize I'd be missed. Um, as explained on another thread, budget prep and a bad Skyrim addiction have kept me away from the Bilge. I'm done with the budget, so I should be popping in from time to time again. (From work, anyway - not done with Skyrim yet!)

Skyrim....is that Skype's competitor or a good vodka?

Hi Nanners - neither, it's the long-awaited fifth major installment in the Elder Scrolls series of video games. Shoo-in for Game of the Year and - despite some flaws - the best game I've ever played.

Hey Courtney, good to see you! On the Skyrim thing, is it necessary to start with Elder Scrolls I or can a person just jump in at this level? Are the previous installments as good as this one?

You can jump right in, no question, or you could start with Oblivion (Elder Scrolls 4) which is just about as much fun. Skyrim has eliminated character classes and tweaked the skill/levelling system, and it might be more enjoyable to go from Oblivion to Skyrim rather than the other way 'round. Also Skyrim has potential for many more hours of play, so it might be worth playing through Oblivion first.
I think if I was going to play both I'd start with Oblivion. I'm even considering playing through Morrowind (ES 3) just for the halibut.

Speaking of computer games, are you coming back to gameknot?

Yeah, but only when I'm done with Skyrim. I can't concentrate on both at once, and I'm kind of obsessed. Good thing I'm almost finished with Skyrim... seriously.

After I posted the question I looked at some info on the Elder Scroll series. It's been game of the year since Morrowind so I think I'll start there. Sounds fascinating.

It is that... the whole open-world, multiple-storyline role-playing thing is a lot of fun. As a bonus, if you start with Morrowind, I can guarantee you'll be able to run it on your current hardware.
