Japanese cars, built in the U.S., to be sold in Korea

Too much fun:

http://www.foxnews.com/leisure/2011/...o-south-korea/

Live in South Korea? Want to buy an American car?
Perhaps you should check out the Toyota Camry.
The Japanese automaker announced today that it will begin exporting Camry’s produced at its Georgetown, Ky., plant to South Korea starting in January.
Read: The "Most American Car" is Japanese?
The move was made possible by a recent free trade pact between the United States and South Korea that lowered the tariff on imported cars from 8 to 4 percent, and will eventually wipe it out completely. Automakers are also not required to recertify their vehicles to meet South Korean safety standards, a costly process, if they are sold in low volumes.
Toyota expects to deliver just 6,000 Camrys in South Korea annually. It will be the first time that U.S.-built versions of the popular model will be sold outside of North America. Several other Toyota products made in the U.S., including the Tundra pickup truck, are already exported to 19 countries.

A strong Japanese yen has made it unprofitable to export cars like the Camry from Japan. In September Toyota said it would stop shipping Japanese-build Camrys to the U.S., and this past week, Nissan COO Toshiyuki Shiga announced that his company will no longer build cars in Japan that are developed solely for export.
So now, jobs are being offshored to the U.S.

The Georgetown plant is quite impressive; very clean neat and tidy inside, and automated to the nth degree--I visited in 2006 and then a week later toured Chrysler's Jefferson assembly plant in Detroit and the Lake Orion GM plant.

Somehow I am missing the point.

ANd on that note Japan's age demographic could not provide enough workers willing to to work at offshore rates and reduced benefits.

BTW Oz capital investment in US manufacture is now at $440B and rising.

No wukkas. BTW I think the respective o/s OZ and US $ figures ($510B) are ABS sourced from abt 2008. I suspect AUSCAT, Hardies and BHP Billiton projects has bumped that considerably. Bamamick might know of the AUSCAT matter.

Yes, I think in the long run our demographics are favorable compared to most industrialized countries. And it's not before time that we stepped up the exports, even if 6,000 cars a year is a drop in the ocean. I wonder if they'll be shipping Toyotas from Oz as well.

With you, we always wonder!

Honestly, if they paid us what our bombs cost, we'd be a lot better off than we are dropping them.

GM has shipped cars here from Oz, as well. I guess if the currencies float, the costs should even out, and it becomes a question of where you've got the plant set up for that particular product. But I have to wonder whether the higher manufacturing costs at the Japanese plants points to a longer-term problem.

That's roughly the man-hours on the U.S. assembly line to add the 6,000 cars per year to the plant, assuming they aren't merely taking up excess capacity. It's mainly a symbolic gesture, although it is an interesting play on the Korean trade pact.

Perhaps they want the same deal for Japan, but if they're not shipping the model from Japan to here, maybe there really is a price advantage.
