 For some odd reason my 14YO boy desperately wants a Top Hat for Christmas.
I think it's Manga type of thing, Cos play and all that weird adolescent stuff. (his best mate is getting a "battle of britain" type airman's helmet(Hats seem to be something adolescent boys go through):d)
It's not an easy thing to get here, not really part of our culture and all that.
I could buy one new

Any one got one they want to get rid off? I'll pay $50 plus postage if it's not too much.
His head is 55cm .

I had one... size 58. However, I no longer have it. I do believe that one of my sons was involved in its disappearance.

My son went through a stage where he insisted on wearing a trenchcoat. It will pass.

You have to find out what he means by "top hat"; there are a lot of different shapes under that name. Sample in .au (http://www.hatworld.com.au/index.cfm?action=category&catid=32)

His head is 55cm .:rolleyes:A real topper? New, they're difficult/impossible to find, unless you have a good hatter fabricate one for you. Used/Vintage, they're expensive. A beaver topper in decent condition will prolly run you c. USD $300 or more. Silk...no idea.

If you've got a good hat shop handy, I'd check with them. Else...

Check with theatrical costume suppliers. You should be able to find a "silk" collapsible top hat for a fairly reasonable price.

yeah, skip already linked ebay.
The trouble is I dont trust the stores there any more. to many fakes in this market.

It's OK. I'll ring around the formal hire places and see if their are any slightly bented ones for sale, failing that I'll ring John Kerr's son. :D

Well if he's happy with that.... :D

Too easy Meli. Give him the $50 and bus fare.

Top Hats are plastic but they're great little boats!

I'd wear one but years ago my preference would have been the boat.;)
I use to wear a Derby for awhile...it looked pretty cool with my John Lennon glasses and long hair. I thought so anyway.

Try a tuxedo rental place. I wore one at my wedding.

Or get him plans for this:

It's a delicate balance of looking different but fitting in as well.

Fetish would seem a rather derogatory term to use for a young mans quest to look cool amongst his mates Meli. I gave my neighbors son a Brad Pitt style hat from City Beach for his birthday after he passed his first guitar exams and he loves it, wears it everywhere and reckons he looks very cool in it.

Not being derogatory, just boys seem to have this thing about strange headgear. (yer, I know women wear hats for decoration but we dont wear them in the house, (or walk around nekid at 6am (except for our hat) clutching cups of coffee, to be reported buy the local busybody.

And dont get me started on nekid men in just socks. :D

I think it should be encouraged. This guy certainly 'knew' how to wear one.

I believe these days, a satin top hat goes for about $300. No wonder they were a status item!

As said, go to a tux rental place where they rent clothes for weddings. They have top hats they rent. They get banged up pretty quick by young guys who get drunk at wedding receptions. They'd probably sell you a "beater" for cheap. That's were I got one for a costume party one time.

Meli

I asked there, the posh place said they'd only had 2 weddings this year wanting top hats:rolleyes:
I might ring a couple of low end places :D
