    Thomas Jefferson said....

Quote; "When the government fear the people, there is liberty....When the people fear the governments, there is tyranny".

Here is a letter to the editor, Homer News, Alaska

Story last updated at 4:02 PM on Wednesday, November 30, 2011

    Movement: history in the making

The Occupy Movement, in a simple explanation, is a group of citizens that have decided they have had enough with corporations having way too much power in politics. We very much love what our country was founded upon originally and seek to restore the liberties we once had. We no longer believe that our government is of, for and by the people. We believe the government is of, for and by the corporations, especially those involved with the banking industry.

To date, the most substantial piece that we are working on is repealing the Citizens United v. FEC ruling and creating a constitutional amendment clearly defining that "Corporations Are Not People" or, that we hold corporations accountable like we do citizens, up to and including the corporate death penalty. Our objective is to allow those in office to create this legislation, but if they cannot we will do it ourselves by removing them from office and replacing them.

The Occupy Movement as a whole uses protesting as a way to gain more support from like-minded individuals, reach those not aware of us, disrupt corporate money flows and remind our government that "we the people" are in charge of this country. For too long, we have allowed our government to derail our system of democracy by creating this constant state of fear and corruption we live in today.

Thomas Jefferson once said, "When governments fear the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny."

Occupy has the hearts of more people than most folks realize and we see this every time we protest as more cars pass by that wave and honk at us, then there are those that ignore or shout derogatory comments and gesture at us.

If you don't think this Occupy Movement will work, think again. Since the protests started in New York City, it is estimated that one million people have transferred from the big banks to credit unions, totaling a whopping $4.5 billion in transfers. We also watched Wells Fargo, Bank of America and other banks scrap their $5 debit card fee as a result of this. In addition to this, we have started to see new legislation pop-up such as HB Resolution 88 which will clearly define that "Corporations Are Not People" in a constitutional amendment. I'm glad to be part of this beautiful history in the making.

    Occupy Homer?

    I like his sentiments, though.
“The big joke on democracy is that it gives its mortal enemies the tools to its own destruction,” Goebbels said as the Nazis rose to power—one of those quotes that sound apocryphal but are not.

I believe it is incorrect that Thomas Jefferson said this. I checked a number of websites and a number of sources say that this quote in fact should be attributed to Gerald Ford. Here is what it says on the Monticello website, which I think should be a reasonable unbiased source.

The "Government big enough to take everything" quote is definitely Gerald Ford, in 1974. Jefferson didn't write that bit in the initial post about government fearing the people either. The earliest known appearance is in 1914. Look here. Bogus Jefferson quotes are surprisingly common.

To date however, the most likely source of this quotation appears to be a series of debates on socialism published in 1914, in which John Basil Barnhill said, "Where the people fear the government you have tyranny. Where the government fears the people you have liberty."

Jefferson was an interesting fellow, but often not too helpful if you want to use him to support modern political positions. You know about his edited version of the Bible, I presume? Check it out here.

tj.gov does not appear to exist! If you can find a website that contradicts the Monticello website you also need to explain why we should give your website more credence than the Monticello website.

The bible down through the ages has caused many a consternation. We have a family story which is documented in history, of my great Grandfather beheading his brother, over whom could be baptized. They were both Elders in the Church of Martin Luther circa 1500.

I very much doubt that your great grandfather was alive in 1500!

One presumes the term "grandfather" is used loosely rather than as a specific for any one related predecessor going back many generations? Perhaps "ancestor" would be a better term, certainly more understandable in it's standard usage. Grandfather is pretty specific. I don't normally correct English usage (can't afford to as a rule), but this one's pretty flagrant!

I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around [the banks] will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs.Thomas Jefferson, (Attributed)
