It'd be nice if a certain segment of sporty automobiles came with driving lessons as part of the package <sigh>

In the far distant past, I used to race Fiats & Alfas in SCCA events, and some less 'formal' venues. I was self-taught - but those were very wimpy vehicles compared to what they turn all these idiots loose with these days. If I were to buy a vette, lotus, ferarri, beemer, etc. I think the first thing I'd do is to take some driving lessons where they started you out with the schools cars, then let you shift over to your own rig for later lessons. Not just for the refresher, but to learn to handle all those horses!

The Bigfella
11-29-2011, 03:24 PM
Are Corvettes that hard to drive?

David G
11-29-2011, 03:28 PM
Forget about handling the horses.. they needed lessons on handling their egos and their hormones.

There's no sure cure for stupid... but it is possible to take the edge off.

John B

I watched it again,I haven't changed my mind but I see the left bend in the road has probably added to his confusion. And there's a bump at the intersection threshold which might have helped break traction.

Tylerdurden

Corvettes are not the easiest beast to handle under power. Looks like some panic ensued when the jerk started to lose it. Never been a big fan of vettes since I drove my first 427. Even if you come off the throttle they want to stay sideways. Problem is that the majority who can afford one have no clue how to drive one.
I never was a fan of testosterone fueled red light racing but will admit I have done my fair share of being stupid. For years now when some douche' does the rev up thing I just cut my wheels right at them and yell "Best be quick" It has a calming effect most often.

Paul Pless

Corvettes are not the easiest beast to handle under power.Of all high powered cars that I've driven I find them among the easiest. Extremely predictable and tractable power delivery. Forgiving. Gobs of traction.

Dude that lost it was a total dork. He must have had the traction control turned off, that would've never happened with the driver aids turned on. Which is quite weird, the one situation where I would most want traction control is drag racing.

Aren't the floor pans made out of Balsa wood?Yup, they are made out of an end grain balsa cored composite panel. The darker grey flat panel show here. The remainder of the chassis in hydro-formed aluminum around the driver's compartment with forged magnesium front and rear sub-assemblies. Pretty ain't it!

Back in the day they were a deal and if you consider 200MPH cars still a bargain of sorts. I graduated in thought being a Boston road warrior. I would rather have a vehicle with decent overall performance but can take a punch like a detroit miler would. Big iron with lots of power and the capabilty of putting the Corvette into a gaurdrail. Not at all like rabbit hunting with a big fifty. Most of us here that own fast cars book track time Phillip. Additionally, there are aesthetic reasons for owning such a car, similar to having an interest in wooden boats. I doubt it is any easier to get an SCCA license today than when I got mine. Not even sure who is doing the schools now as I went through Bob Bondurant way back when Spot was a pup. I seriously doubt more and a few percent who own performance cars hold a competition license.

The author of the video was apparently interviewed. Apparently, he could see it coming [literally] from a mile away :D

According to the Daily Mail:

Gerod Rush, 29, who recorded the footage last Thursday, posted it on YouTube under the title 'Two Turkeys on Thanksgiving wrecking their Corvettes in The Woodlands'.

He told yourhoustonnews.com: 'They were driving like idiots a mile before and then pulled up to a red light, revving their engines at each other.
'I had a feeling that I knew what was going to happen next.'
.
.
.
Mr Rush added: 'I noticed before, when they were going at it just earlier, that the right-side car's back tyre was losing traction.
'So when he hard-accelerated at the light, he lost traction and then lost control.'

A little earlier today I saw this: Police in Montgomery County, Texas have reopened an investigation into a crash involving two Chevrolet Corvette drivers on Thanksgiving day. Officers on the scene originally called the crash an accident but decided to take a second look after a video of the two sports cars racing from light to light surfaced on the web.

I wonder waht will happen next.

An accident? Sorry, but that one would've drawn a negligent driving charge here at the least... and a street racing charge (with 3 month confiscation of the vehicles) on the basis of the video.

Meanwhile, I've had a nice drive onthe world's second best race track this week. Took it easy, nothing over 136mph.

Me too. I had a '61 356SC. It was happiest at aboout 80mph, or on twisty roads. At 75hp, it didn't match my FIL's 400hp souped-up 'vette, but if he was caught in traffic the 'vette would overheat in two minutes.
