Since I'm past the forekeel adventure, I'll just call the rest of this without the 'fore'.

That piece of Oak that I had almost ready for the horn is scrap. It checked way too much, and after I looked at the remaining horn, I decided to take it five more inches aft, so I'll start over on the horn. No big deal, except that it's almost to hot in the shed to work. Re-cutting the boat half of the scarf won't be fun.

The floor replacements are fun, though. I'm leaving the keelbolts in and cutting the new floor to fit the space. I get close with the pre-drilled top part of the floor, then laminate enough oak to reach the keelson, which means I've gotta be real close with the bolt hole.
I tried something different on this hole, a 23 incher. When I mow the lawn, I look at where I want to end up, and I wind up with a straight cut. I tried the same thing with this bolt hole, and it came in within 1/16". (I really did draw the lines first)
Sonja's original keelbolts weren't centered on the keelson, and I left 'em that way, that's why it looks off-center. This bolt comes close to the frame at that point, and the hole is just at the right distance from the edge. Maybe I just got lucky.
My father made the 32 inch, 5/8 drill bit years ago. Still works.

I like your strategy. To drill the holes in my new floors, I ended up drilling before laminating up the floor pieces. This meant that I only had to drill a few inches at a time, then align them when it came time to glue. Worked pretty well as I could put each piece in my drill press.

Great shot Rich!

Sonja's original keelbolts weren't centered on the keelsonWhat was the reason for this do you know? does it affect her in anyway?? Just seems interesting thats all.

Keep on updating us mate...

Take it easy

Shane, nothing about port and startboard on that boat was symetrical. The group, SSKF in Sweden, that keeps records of these boats said that the Oscar Schelin yard was famous for producing symetrical hulls..... BS. The port side is as much as 3/4" off at the deck and I could see it in the frames that I replaced. I laid them on top of one another and they didn't match by quite a bit. I'm wondering if this was a test hull to see which tack sailed better, with results being perfected in other hulls built later. (would they do that, or am I just being stupid?) There are three known hulls which are supposed to be sisterships, the last just surfaced a couple months ago, 22-S203. I'd be curious to see if that hull is symetrical. I think it's in Maine right now and has several broken frames and needs some work. I have some recent photos and she's a mirror of Sonja.

The other thing about two of the keelbolts is that they weren't drilled perfectly vertical. They're off by about 5+ degrees, making floor-fitting and drilling more complicated.

Nice job! Tough one about the checking oak....but you'll sleep better. :D

I've offset boreholes so that the fibers that are cut by the drill bit don't align, and decrease the strength of the piece.
