Sorry about that, old chap. One must move with the times, and all that.

Thinking about it...

Aetheflaed - outstanding, but of course "only" Queen of Mercia. Good war leader, all the same.

Matilda - might have been OK except that she was fighting Stephen all the time, so Not Good

Mary Tudor - Definitely Not Good

Elizabeth 1 - Great.

Mary - fine but shared the throne with her husband so does not count

Anne - fine

Victoria - excellent

Elizabeth II - outstanding.

So, on the whole, women do better at the job than men.

And since the King of Spain seems to have stopped trying to invade is we can stop worrying about people marrying Catholics..

Andrew I think William shared the throne with Mary.LOL. She was by heredity, inline with the Stuarts. Of course, he outlived her. I guess this can be debated. Otherwise, I agree with your list. Bloody Mary didn't live long enough for me to have an opinion. What she did in her life time, though short as it was, makes me agree about her as well.About Victoria, she had a good number of excellent Prime Ministers. Victoria was wrapped up over the death of her husband, I sometimes think that it was her Prime Ministers that really carried the weight.

ps.. I always love it when a newly elected president always ends up, through genealogical work that they were related to royals. Of course, the relationship might be dating back to the 15th century, but I get a kick out of it.

pps. I don't recall William the 2nd having th designation of "King" Queen Mary, yes.

How many older sisters have you got?

Jamie, so far as I can see all US Presidents have to be of Irish extraction and descended from the British royal family, it seems to be a requirement for the post!

How many older sisters have you got?

Just one, but her wrist isn't up to the 'acknowledging the hoi polloi' requirements, so she's out of the running.

As an aside, I am really, truly somewhere in a line of succession. My great aunt was Sybil Hathaway, Dame of Sark, one of the Channel Islands which retains a hereditary monarchy. http://www.sark.info/

I've given up crossing my fingers about rising to ownership, but I very much hope to get there someday. It looks wonderful: "Dark Skies", sheep racing....

Mary II was rather directly descended from the Stuarts, in fact she was one, as was her younger sister Queen Anne, as their father was James II.

Which raises an interesing point - if Mary and Anne had been able to suceed to the throne ahead of their kid brother (assuming for the sake of argument that he was legitimate and not smuggled in in a warming pan!) then the Glorious Revolution would not have taken place, since it was the birth of the boy that triggered it. Which would have meant, perhaps, no Bill of Rights...no wars with Louis XIV, no Marlborough, no Act of Settlement, etc...

I think I said that about Mary and Anne ACB which is why I posted what I did. And yes, the birth of a son to James the second was the death nell (Catholic line) as the son would have been Catholic. Bonny Prince Charlie and the Pretender. Was William 3rd ever actually called king? I don't recall.

For your interest ACB. Interesting to see how many were related to Edward Longshanks, Edward the second and Edward the third.
