I am planning on building a wooden small to medium sized trailerable transport landingcraft type boat but have not yet found any plans. It will be used to cross Straits of Mackinac from the U.P. to Mackinac Island to transport my family and groceries.

Landing craft! I was actually thinkning of building a replica of the Allied WWII LCVP. If you think your up for it, Google LCVP, go to your library, search patents, and ask around. Most likely you won't find the plans for it so use some scale drawings and some boatbuilding insight to mock up your own. The plumb (if not almost plumb) sides and simple outfitting makes it a very simple boat to build.

Didn't Bolger design something like that. If I recall correctly, it was used to transport lawn mowers out to the islands in Boston Harbor. There is a Bolger group on Yahoo that might know of this design.

The Bolger designed "lawnmower landing craft" design name is 'Charity'; it's an aluminum 25 footer [iirc].

The design is written up in "30-Odd Boats", by PCB.

Thanks for coming up with that DerekW. It nice to know that even though I occasionally have problems remembering names, I still have a firm grasp on the important things!

I don't think of the Straits as being kindly waters for an amatuer's scaling of a landing craft. Write to Bolger and ask him to recommend or design something for you.

This might be something like you’re thinking of. http://www.bateau.com/studyplans/HB18_study.htm

But this is a flat water boat and may not stand up to the conditions you plan to operate in.

Or Roger Long's Reliance might be a good starting point (he's a forum member) http://home.maine.rr.com/rlma/Boats.htm

I wouldn't get too hung up on making the boat look like a landing craft. What you want is a boat that will safely take your family across open water. I doubt you would want to leave any boat at the surf line for long, so your options are something light enough to pull out of the water above the high water line (read probably not safe for open water crossings) or something that can nose into the beach to disembark passengers and gear and then be moored offshore on a tether retrievable from shore. A Tolman skiff would fit the latter situation.

I kinda like the LCVP-design! All that and wood, too... :D
