So after drifting around more than sailing yesterday I cursed the god's and swore off sailing (at least until next week) and decided what I really need is a powerboat so we can go skiing and that would also keep the wife happy. Now I've been thinking about building one of the Hankinson designs for some time, Hankinson (http://www.boatdesigns.com)
but the hassles of inboard installation and care and hearing some advice from others here on the WBF have got me thinking about going w/ the new four stroke outboards... So, my question is, does anyone know of a good looking plan for wood construction suitable for outboard power? Must LOOK classic along the lines of a runabout/utility type boat. I don't want a Deep V style ski boat. I'm not asking for much am I?

hey sailor dave, I am finishing up Ken Hankinsons Biscayne 22. nice boat, engine installation wasn't too bad. hope to see water in the Spring. As far as an outboard boat, how many people do you want to seat and how big a boat? regards, Mitchell in CT

Dave.....Any chance you would consider restoring instead of building? Lyman Boatworks of Sandusky,Ohio made some very nice outboard runabouts from the 1950's to the1970's. Models ranged from 13ft. to 18ft. There are quite a few still around and they're not real expensive. I'm restoring a 1961 16ft. Outboard/Runabout that I hope will look like the one in this picture when I'm done--->

If you want to learn more about Lyman boats and see what is available check out Tom Koroknay's website---->

Mitchell: I'd like to have capacity for 5, maybe 6, and be able to throw in a cooler and some skis. I'm thinking maybe 18-19 feet, 20 at the most. I'd also like to do it cold molded or a strip/cold mold composite. Hankinsons KEY LARGO is a barrelback Utility. That is scoring high right now, but I'd like to find out what is available in outboard power. Hankinson emailed me back that the inboards are not able to be converted and doesn't design outboards w/ that look....

Roger: Zip is GREAT! I checked out pictures of her when you lauched her. How many does she carry and how fast can she go? Since it doesn't do any good to have a powerboat if SWMBO can't ski I have to be able to do 35 mph...

Kevin: I've thought about the restoration route, but I really would rather do it all new and cold molded; stiffer hull, dry and don't have to worry about rot, etc. Plus I like doing that. The Lymans are a nice looking boat though...

David,
I outfit her to hold four in modern boat seats, but I imagine she could hold five or at max six with bucket seats.

I'm running a 1958 40 hp Merc, and I get about 30 mph out of her alone aboard. The max recommended horsepower is 40 hp. I believe I need to pitch the prop differently, but haven't gotten around to it. I would imagine with four people aboard, and with even 45 hp, you might have trouble pulling a skier, so perhaps something larger...? Malahini is rated to 85 hp.

Hope this helps,
R

While I don't know about skiing behind it, the Sunray design from Ed Monk's "How To Build Wooden Boats" would appear to fit your classic look requirement.

Sunray is 16'6" x 5'0" with 2 bench seats approx 4'-4'6" wide. A picture of one of these is at http://www.portcarlingboats.com/Muskoka%20Boats%20for%20Sale.htm

A very handsome example of Sunray's little sister - Sunbeam, 14'8" x 4'9" - was pictured in the Launchings section of the February 2001 issue of WoodenBoat.

Both of these designs are for batten-seam construction. As they should be, some would say...

Sailordave,

You should visit Jacques Mertens' (http://www.bateau.com) web site. They have a *ton* of outboard designs from 11 feet to 23 feet.

Hi Dave Another boat to further confuse things. This is a Tracy Obrien V19 Deadrise, W/ a center console. Built in the winter of 99-00, its powered by a 50 Evinrude 4 stroke. It does 31 mph W/ 2aboard and has a cruising speed of 25 to 28 mph using gps. We have just completed its third season, and have logged nearly 1000 hrs. To say the that my wife and I like this boat is a gross undrestatement. Jerry Mathieu http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid40/p73ff8e303c0eec235e1bda42b1bba5ac/fd016ec7.jpg
