    What's This Button For?

There is a button just under the dash of my Nissan and when I push it an orange light comes on on the dash. The light is a little symbol...there is an 'S' inside a circle and that circle is in the middle of four other smaller circles, which I'm fairly certain represent the transmission (big circle with 'S' in it) and the wheels of the car. That's my best guess anyway.
When the button is pushed and the little light comes on there seems to be better traction.......might be wishful thinking but that's what it seems like.

So, I'm guessing (again) that the button controls traction, somehow, in this, allegedly, all-wheel drive car.

But, what's it doing? Is it a center diff lock? Some sort of torque control? It's an auto trans if that's any help.

    All serious responses appreciated.

All silly, funny or ridiculous responses expected.

It may be a "Sport" mode.

Or maybe it stands for, 'Seanz, didn't this car come with an owners manual?'

"Stupid" It's the stupid button, mostly for passengers with time to kill. They push it, ask "what?" and that alows you to indulge in creative imagineering until you go too far andf they realise they've been had and you yell "Stupid!".
(That is unless it's SWMBO of course)

It's a 20th Century car, I think that's back when you didn't have 'sports' buttons, you just drove quick and thought sporty thoughts.

Hmmm......the obvious solution, eh? Don't think it did, would have been printed in Japanese (it's an secondhand import) anyway, which I really should learn one day.
I'll try googling it, you never know.........

Maybe it's the 'Strewth!' button for when you've missed the bend and are dodging roadside trees?

Wikipedia has a much better article on the transmission than last time I looked.

Maybe it turns off the electronic sensors for the torque split? That would turn the car into a 'normal' fulltime AWD.

Hope it's not 'S' for seismic.

That "S" on that button probably stands for Snow. Did you press it and cause the last two days?

                          Re: What's This Button For?

ATTESA-ETS (GT-R version) The 2009 Nissan GT-R uses an updated version of the ATTESA-E-TS, and is designed to work with the car's rear transaxle layout. The system is unique in a way that it utilizes two driveshafts under the vehicle's centerline, with a second driveshaft running slightly to the right of the main driveshaft and engine sending power to the front wheels. It is so far, the only rear transaxle-based AWD system for a front engined car in production.
Unlike the previous ATTESA systems which relied heavily on mechanical feedback, the system in the GT-R uses electronic sensors and hydraulically-actuated clutches. It also has a yaw-rate feedback control system, effectively managing slip angle. Front rear torque split can go from 2:98 during a standing start to a maximum of 50:50[2]

Nah, it's got a snow button but that's on the center console.....has the 'amusing' habit of being on/off when you don't want it to be off/on. Locks out 1st gear, so you either spin wheels at take-off on snow, or pull out very slowly into traffic in the dry. Flat rocker switches on consoles were not a clever idea. Don't think it actually causes snow.
But did you know that a busted wiper motor can cause rain?
                            True.
