My wife, two boys and I spent the last week near Keswick, in the Lakes, building a canoe! It was a fantastic week.
From plywood and epoxy, it looks rough and ready but it paddles beautifully. My first "real" wooden boat.
We were with an outfit called ORCA (http://www.orcadventures.co.uk/index.htm), who mostly do canoeing trips but have branched out into building courses.

This is me and Thing Two on Derwent Water in the rain......a typical Lakeland summer day.

Now you have me curious...what is that white stuff in the joints? Some kind of cotton to hold the epoxy?. I have never seen that method before.

Hmm, well now. Thoughts turn, naturally, to something bigger but my wife's keeping me tightly under control right now.

I'm not certain exactly what it is. It came as a sheet of material; probably 3 or 4 mil' thick and about the consistency of the insulation you might sew into a jacket. It wouldn't cut with scissors though, so it must be something quite tough.
The chap who runs the course takes canoeing expeditions all over the world. They build the canoes when they get there so the construction techniques are as simple as possible. They take the minimum of equipment with them and use local materials. So the wadding could be almost anything.

Sweet! But be very, very, very careful...

You stand a high risk of contracting the dreaded, "Wooden Canoe Bug"!

It is a terminal disease - absolutely no cure. You will spend the rest of your life just managing the symptoms.

Ugly, ugly disease.

The symptoms don't include moving the canoe into the house with you, do they?

Too late... it's terminal!

I suspect it is a substitute for fillets...it gets a lot of epoxy in the joint area. Do they tape the seams or just leave it at that?

They're taped on the inside.
