View Full Version : Dorys
Hi
A freind of mine is interested in building a dory for his own use. He isn't a forumite so I hope you all can make some suggesions. Gene has built one of Pygmy boats stich and glue kayaks. He is looking for a dory that is big enough for he and his kid to go fishing, that he can row and sail.
I will show him both the John Dory and Amberjack designs by Iain Oughtred. do you all have any other suggesions.
You say -DORY, ROW AND SAIL.- Thats easy, a alpha dory, go to www.glen-l.com (http://www.glen-l.com) and under sailboats you will see there version of a alpha dory, there's is 18 foot and the originals where 21 ft. i believe. Also look in the picture section and you can see a couple more of them. Tell your friend if he is interested in dory's to get john gardners book -The Dory Book. I bought that book 25 years ago when it was out of print, and had to be facsmiled copied, I paid the unheard of price of $75. back then, and consider it one of the few overpriced items that i never regretted paying for.

The "Dory Book" by John Gardner. Or his "Building Classic Small Craft." For seaworthy fun under oar or sail it's hard to beat the Chamberlain gunning dory or the swampscott dory.
There was an article in WB in the last year or so that shows a modified camberlain made for extensive beach cruising.

JimM,
I am just up the road from you in Winthrop, Wa. I have a Stickleback dory of Iain Oughtred's design which I built. She is a nice little Swampscott dory of 16ft. He may call it something different now.
I have several other boats here, most of which I built. One is a big 30ft. Swampscott.
I would be glad to talk to you or your friend about designs. I use my boats mostly in the salt water over on the coast but also on the Columbia and inland lakes.
Always like to talk boats so give a shout if I can help.
Here's to kindness,
Dave
Dave thanks for the offer. I will pass on your offer to Gene.
I think that the boat Oughtred is calling the Amberjack is the same boat you built. I don't know why he changed the name. I think that this is the boat Gene will be interested.
Thanks you Ron, Jake and Ian.
I will also pass on your helpful suggestions.
