I was just reading Ed Nye's post and it struck me that there must be more people like me who don't understand technical (nautical) terms. For instance, what is the significance of dory in dory ketch and am I right that ketch refers to the position of the masts? Also what is or are batten seams. A website detailing these terms would be very helpful.

A dory is a hull form (there's more then one type of dory), a ketch is a type of rig (there's more then one type of ketch) and batten seam is a construction method.

There are many books, both for beginners and the more versed available through the book store here or at a library. There is a site that may help called John's Nautical Page or the Mother of all Nautical pages or something like that. Try the search thingie in the upper right hand corner.

You're obviously at the beginning of your madness on this subject. READ, lots and then read some more. Other then love, boats, the sea and wooden boats have been written about more then anything else. Then of course, there are some of us who just like pain and buy, fix, build, sail and try to enjoy the damn things. Probably 'cause we didn't get spanked enough as kids or something.
