    Lathe? That's Not a Lathe...

[Dundee is threatened by a machinist with a lathe]
Sue Charlton: Mick, give him your wallet.
Michael J. "Crocodile" Dundee: What for?
Sue Charlton: He's got a lathe.
Michael J. "Crocodile" Dundee: [chuckling] That's not a lathe... [draws his lathe] ...Now this...this is a lathe.
[Machinist and his friends run away]
Michael J. "Crocodile" Dundee: Just kids having fun. You alright?

Dennis Elliott has a hell of a cool lathe he had custom made for his turnings. Stopped by to pick up a few pieces of his for a show I was currating back in...97...98. He allowed me to watch a little bit, but he really doesn't like people in the shop when he's working.
8AM, chips and ribbons flying, and slamming down a Budweiser can.... I asked his wife how he could drink Bud at that hour of the day, and keep working... "It's past noon in London..."
And yes he turns his own sticks.

Any of you guys worried about three phase PM me and I will help set you up. I just sold my last 25hp rotary phase converter and kept the 15 for testing equipmet as i am on single phase feed. Don't let three phase hold you back as there are huge deals on that type of equipment.

Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.

Here's a Bullard shipboard vertical lathe, not the largest, but different.

I'm not sure we'd even know how to turn out large naval gunbarrels these days if we had to.

Ah,to have been the probverbial fly on the wall when the Japanese were turning Yamato's 18" tubes!. O my.
