I lived in dread and fear of Hookworm... Walking barefoot through the cow pastures was ideal Hookworm territory...
What was your favorite? :D

botebum
07-28-2011, 06:05 PM
Worms, ticks, leeches.
I had'em all.
Don't really have a favorite.
The leech episode was probably the scariest. Little dude managed to attach himself about an inch away from ... well, let's just say it was scary.

As concerning internal parasites. None..
Leeches etc. are interesting.Ran into those in the Amazon, but unlike Doug. I ended up with more than one.
Of course there are medical pluses with leeches. Used for centuries...

Mrleft8

Yeah..... I've had my share of leeches.... And not just from the WBF either! ;)

In the Amazon, Piranhas were the ones I worried about. Army ants, etc. I could deal with Leeches I could deal with..

In some cases, I'd worry about meningeal worms. I think a few formites have those already.:)

Leeches were bad enough, but I tell you, the combination of a family that hunts and fishes for subsistence AND includes a parasitologist is enough to make one vegan. (Not me, I toughed it out, but trust me.)

The worst, for sheer ick factor, had to be warble flies... or more precisely, watching Inuk friends snack on them after the hide was removed from an August caribou.

S.V. Airlie
07-28-2011, 06:38 PM
I don't think being a "vagan" helps that much...

Flying Orca
07-28-2011, 06:39 PM
The word is vegan, Jamie, and it certainly cuts your chances of ingesting worms from cysts in fish or venison.

Nasty little buggers.

There is some parasite being found in Stripper in the Chesapeake. I am not familiar with them. Don't know a lot about them, what ever the fisherman are contracting, it has killed a few of them. Parasite? Virus? I just don't know. But this is just from handling them and not eating them.

Glen and Doug. I seen a lot of errors are posted here. Unlike you, I do not bring them to the forefrontand make a case out of the errors..*
I let them ride. Yes, I could bring up every case of a misspelling etc.,but I see no sense in doing so. Of course, if I do what a select few do, it should be a major event and worth posting about in your small minds.
Keep up your usual garbage. I am more of a man than either of you will ever be for just letting others mistakes ride. Something you can't do...Have a good day...

Jamie, You used 'stripper' and 'parasite' in the same sentence. Can you really blame someone for making a joke out of it?

Every so often (once every 3 years or so) we'd get an infestation of fleas. Usually coincided with a litter of kittens... I think the dog suffered most. Did you know that cat fleas will jump on a dog, but dog fleas tend not to jump onto cats? (Neither has any problems with jumping on humans.)

I saw a documentary not too long ago. (Medical)..A woman came into the doc's office with larvae squirming around her eye balls. You could actually see them moving. From what I gather, it (parasite) eggs were transferred to the woman from animal feces. Rare granted, but it looked UGLY.

well we (well our kids generally) have lice and threadworm.
walking in the bush you might pick up a leech

Meli
07-30-2011, 09:23 AM
I think those internal parasites are from eating "wild" meat. We dont do too much of that over here. Unless you're indiginous and even then ... well you'd have to ask an original.

S.V. Airlie

Scuse I, I'm a very left wing liberal librarian. We deplore such adulterated trash, as does any educated lover of literature. There are idiots and biggots on both sides of politics, like those that demand science be taken out of schools and replaced with creationism, Of cause We KNOW these knucklheads are consevatives, every last one of them!!!
