Sucia is a small island in the San Juan's. Every year, a bunch of the Coots... and various other boat nuts... converge there for some boating, camping, and cruising. Some very nice boats this year. Courtesy of the Doryman, Michael Bogoger, here are some fotos from this year. There are even some showing what McMullen looks like when NOT in an Oughtred boat! Be sure to click on 'show info' for captions. Fotos by the Doryman:

Nice pitchers, David. And to think that some people choose to live in places like southern California and Jersey.

Lovely! Thank you David. I'll add that to the long list of places that I'd like to visit while knowing it'll never happen:) JayInOz

Great slideshow. And what is that lovely double-ender, Dawn Treader?

Wox,

You didn't follow instructions, now did you? <G> The 'show info' button will make the captions pop up. Said captions tell us that that canoe yawl (which I'd never seen before) belongs to one of our Canadian bretheren. It's a Garden "Eel".

Looks like a great time and it certainly looks like a great place! I'll add it to my list of "Gotta go there" places.

...now where are those Pathfinder study plans?

Thanks, David!
We haven't made it over to Sucia as of yet.
Looks lovely.

David -- No, I'm not much on instructions. I had thought it looked a bit big to be an Eel. I also see he went with a raised deck. Very nice. He's got the color scheme just so, too.

All the credit goes to Jamie Orr - our man in Victoria - who is one of the prime movers for this event, and Michael Bogoger - who took all the fotos.

ETA - btw... Michael's "Doryman" blog is worth keeping up with. He's always up to something interesting boatwise:

Great photos! Lots of memories brought back to me.

Just a note to those who don't know the area, Sucia is but one of hundreds of beautiful spots in the San Juans. Throw in the Canadian Gulf Islands and you get a real cruisers paradise - Relatively protected waters, hardly more than yards between possible destinations. "The Banana Belt" gets less rain than the mainland Washington coast.

I spent a season based in Friday Harbor back in the '80s. My only negative impression was the lack of decent, consistent sailing breezes, but not even this old diehard rag hauler would call that much of a drawback! If you want to go sailing, The Straits of Juan de Fuca are capable of giving you plenty of breeze.

Thanks again for the pics!

What's nice about "Sucia" (it's actually an island group) is how friendly the beach at the head of the (main) inlet is for small boats. That includes the tenders from the many large cruisers who come in to anchor down as well. For a modest fee you can tie a smaller boat to the dock, which is nice for a small boat collection like this group. Coming in on a bigger cruiser, I'd prefer to anchor out, but for small boats it's a really nice site. Stewart Island has Reid Harbor, a somewhat similar spot.

Dawn Treader is a beautiful boat.

She certainly is. And Eel is one boat that would fit my criteria for The Next Boat. There are several others that caught my eye. I'm surprised that the E. coast contingent made no comment on finding a Friendship out on Puget Sound. Those two Crocker Stone Horses look nice. For a design from the 30's, I'd say it's holding up pretty well. I really enjoyed seeing Michael's boat, "Saga" - an Atkin 'Valgerda'. And... being a Welsford fan... it was lovely to see a Navigator and a Houdini together. It was also nice to see Lou's 'Kingfisher' complete and afloat. She was the subject of a recent thread by our mutual friend, and fellow Coot, Dirtsailor on her design and construction.

And... of course... there were several 'interesting' boats. Fun to see, but not instilling a burning longing to possess.

Great stuff, Twin. Sucia hasn't changed much since I singlehanded my SJ21 there in the early 90's == what a lovely spot!

What boat was Frank M on?

Frank brought the rasty lookin' Bartender. It's been a long-term project of his, and the fact that is is afloat and went on an outing is a big victory! (now I can start working on him to redo that cabin!)

For a design from the 1930s, I would say holding quite well. I really like to see Michael's boat, "Legend" - Atkin "Valgerda". And ... as a Welsford fan ... it is lovely to see a "navigation" and "a Houdini.
