Hi,
I'm new to the forum and this project will be my first full-size boat (maybe pint-sized is more appropriate) although this jon boat will be almost half the size of the traditional 12' jon boats. I've got basic plans drawn up, but they're messy. I'll try to make some better plans today and then scan them in so you guys can take a look. Anyway, this boat will be similar to the jon boat from Vintage Projects http://www.vintageprojects.com/boats/jon-boat-plans-build.html
although mine is a one man boat designed to fit right in the bed of my truck. As far as construction my plan is to use glue and nails to hold it together (it will have a full frame with plywood panels attached to the outside)

I need some advice about the frame construction and dealing with epoxy.
Is using glue and nails a good idea for a boat like this (at least for the frame)
or should I only use epoxy to glue things together?

Should I epoxy the inside of the boat?

Plywood comes on 8 foot sheets. Why settle for a 7 foot boat? The longer it is the better it will handle. I truck an 8 footer in an S-10 and it is safe and legal.

I chose a S&G design that was designed by a naval architect. It was a good deal because it was a free download. The one thing that is obvious is very small boats do not handle well and cannot be driven fast because of the short waterline. Because my boat was designed by a professional I feel it gives me about as much performance as is possible.
A good set of plans gives you a bill of materials and a detailed instruction about the assembly. No head scratching required. A well thought out design will give you more than a box that floats.
Here are hundreds of free plans.
