Batteau "Mountain Run"

Some say this event is a floating party.
"Lady's Slipper" aground at Joshua Falls.
A well organized rescue. The Golden Retriever's owner said she was in heat.

Freed from the rocks, "Lady's Slipper" makes an eddy turn. It appears to be intentional. A 50 ft. boat has lots of inertia.

It's an annual week long event every June. http://vacanals.org/batteau/index.html The entire trip runs from Lynchburg to Maidens Landing near Goochland, just above Richmond. It's about 90 miles. The batteaux are supposed to be replicas of late 18th-early 19th tobacco hauling craft. They are pretty crude, but they are indeed wooden boats.

Soneone told me that in the early days after these boats transported their cargo downstream they would be taken apart and certain fittings, frames, and other parts would be sent back up river to be used in constructing new boats with locallly obtained planking. I don't know how true that it but it sounded good at the time.
Here is one on display. It was in poor shape when last saw it over a year ago:
You can see it on Google maps!
I think this is a large capacity box and boiler setup that was built there to steam the long planks required for these boats but it looks abandoned now.
