View Full Version : Reached a milestone today in my rebuild of Tortuga

Two weeks ago my new diesel arrived (three weeks ahead of schedule). The engine was delivered onto the boat on May 19 via boom truck and it has been sitting in the cockpit on its shipping pallet since then. Today I went out and bought the materials to build a lifting frame on casters so I can move the engine in the cockpit and lower it into the engine compartment. The frame went together quickly. This picture shows the engine sitting under the frame after I lifted the engine off the shipping pallet and set it back down on a couple of pieces of 2x6.

After I took the engine off the pallet, I clamped the new engine beds in place and lowered the engine into the engine compartment to make sure the engine beds were OK. The picture below shows the engine sitting as I set it down with the chain hoist. I think the beds are OK.

Tomorrow I will pull the engine back out and finish the engine compartment. I still have to install sound insulation on three sides, put the engine drip pan in and install the battery box. The drip pan and battery box are built, but I have to do a bit of framing so I can put plywood around the steering cable runs on the port side before I can install the sound insulation. At any rate, I should have the engine installed for good in a week or so.

Thuis link takes you to a more comprehensive write up of the work I have done this spring.

Congrats on a big milestone. I could not get the link to work though.

Work without problem.... That's nice it doesn't happen often it seems :D

May I suggest to install a squeeze pump just before your fuel filter as I see you do not have any...
The same as outboard use, this way you will never have to bleed your engine, and easy when you change the fuel filter...

Just a idea ;)

I don't know if Todd's engine is like this but having repowered a boat I know that some engines have an electric fuel pump and a fuel return line. This system is self bleeding so it doesn't need a squeeze bulb. It probably would be good to have a backup fuel pump though.

Thanks guys. The engine is a Volvo-Penta D2-40. It isn't self bleeding, but there is a hand pump on the fuel filter mount (black button at starboard aft end of engine). I have dual racor 500 fuel filters before the engine so I should be able to go a couple of years between on-engine fuel filter changes. The engine is very easy to bleed when the fuel filter is changed.

Here is the link again since it seems to be gone above (maybe I forgot to add it): http://www.todddunnmicroyachts.com/tortuga/repower-2.html

I just finished reading the link. It looks like a really clean and tidy install. What are you doing about the raw water system for cooling?

If you look in the pic of the whole engine you can see the raw water seacock. Just out of view at the lower left of the picture is a Grocco raw water strainer. The hoses are currently off because they are in the way for working in the engine compartment. There will be a hose from the strainer to the aft fitting on the transmission cooler. From the tranny cooler there is a hose to the raw water pump. The engine has wet exhaust, so that is where the raw water exits. The injection point for the wet exhaust is 6" above the waterline, so technically I don't need a siphon break, although I will install one anyway.

TD, Nice looking boat, what is she? The usual arrangement is to go from the strainer to the raw water pump, than to the transmission cooler, this way everything is on the 'pressure' side, less chance of trouble with this arrangment...Nice to see such a squared away setup, with new 'iron'! Cheers, BT

I am hooking the raw water up the way Volvo says to do it. If I don't I may void the warranty. Their installation diagram shows Strainer to tranny cooler. The engine came with the hose from the tranny cooler to the raw water pump factory installed.
