Maybe it's because I'm not a paddler... however, I find this a bit of a snooze. Isn't it fun, though, that there are avenues for the expression of such eccentricities! More power to 'em.

Surprisingly, some people can swim. IMHO PFD's are more important when either the wearer can't swim or there is a risk of being knocked out by a swinging boom or something else. To expect someone to wear one in this sort of a scenario as a gentle lake and quiet paddling is, to be perfectly honest, just a wee bit silly. I don't know about the US but over here we are getting a bit sick of the "Nanny State" mentality where there are so many laws set up for our own protection that it's not worth leaving your lounge chair.
