I built a Carolina Dory about 15 years ago and now I would like to build a larger Jim Orrell dory in the 26'-36' range! Is there anyone out there that might have a set I can have copied or does anyone know where I can obtain a set! There were several models such as: " oceanic sharpie skiff 30'and 36',blue norther 36',hurricane 27' power dory, offshore 26' dory/skiff, sampan express26' and 30',surfmaster/rescue 27' and I am sure there were many more. Thank you smile.gif

I believe that Dynamite Payson sells the full range of Capt. Jim's plans, though I don't think it's listed on his web site. Check the classifieds in WB -- there's always a little ad running there for a catalog of 30 dory designs, or something like that, with a Thomaston, Maine address.

I take that back: the ad runs in Messing About in Boats, not WB. If you don't have a copy, send an e-mail or private message and I'll give you the info.

Just got my copy of the packet. Yes, Down East Dories is Dynamite Payson, and yes, the plans are Jim Orell's Texas Dory designs.
Some of the boats that you mention aren't offered, but there are plans for the Sampan Express (22' and 30'), the Beachcomber 23, and the Surfmaster (19', 23', and 27').
As for sailing craft, there are a couple of St. Pierre-style dories from the board of Jay Benford (at 19', 23' and 26'), a ketch called the Voyager (22' and 26'), and the Cape Anne sailing dories from Chapelle.
Plans prices are a real bargain -- only a few are over $35.

It is interesting that "Dynamite" sells Orrell's
plans. Orrell and Bolger fell out a long time ago, and "Dynamite" is one of a few, including me, who sell any of Bolger's plans or derivatives with Phil's blessing.
Over ten years ago Orrell was soliciting all kinds of maritime organizations trying to sell his plans as a going business for an asking price of $35K. He was very ill then.

Back in 1968 we had a copy of Capt Jim Orrell's study plan packet. If HH Payson has all this, the Offshore 26 was one of the nicest designs, also a similar 30 footer that I don't see listed on his site. I believe a 70 hp 4 stroke would push either well enough. The Coastal 22 we built ran 30+ with twin 35's and planed nicely on one. I'll probably build something similar within the next year, need something with a flat bottom to launch off the beach.
