Yep, trouble on a stick. But go for it.

What is an Unlocked Phone?
At its core, an unlocked GSM phone is simply that: a phone not “locked” into a single carrier’s network. Since an unlocked GSM phone is not tied to any carrier, you are free to insert your active GSM SIM card into any unlocked phone and start making calls.http://askville.amazon.com/unlocked-cell-phone/AnswerViewer.do?requestId=1604938

Some things to note, not all carriers will allow an unlocked phone on their network, some insist that you buy your hardware from them. The second thing is that you can buy unlocked cell phones here so you might want to be mindful of prices too, it might not be a deal. On the other hand you could get your paws on a phone that is not available in North America, there are more than a few that never make it to our market.
