Occasionally John Atkin's ninigret is mentioned and other then the atkin website, as well as a section on small boat forum files, and then the nina which is a copy by bateau, there isn't much in way of pictures or builders. Here is some pictures of a ningret that was built in scotland. Scroll down to the last 9 pictures, and they are clickable and able to be enlarged. Should help in giving a good idea of the construction of the ninigret.

John had an eye, shipmates.

The other outboard I really like is by Pete Culler. Not dissimilar. A narrow, medium V, chined hull. I can't remember what he called it. I think he had several lengths.

But Ninigret is first rate. Years of thinking and drawing boats in that one. Great day/fishing boat, or camp cruiser even. Easily driven with moderate power, and about as able as a boat that size can be.

I think I'll go buy the Bayliner with the wet bar, for sale up the road. ;)

But Jack, it may be an automatic with an over priced exhaust system. :D

It's coming Shane, but slowly. We just laminated one of the two frames this afternoon. We'll do the other tomorrow. The hull is right side up, looks great. I posted pics a couple of months ago.
I'm really looking forward to going to the Mahone Bay Wooden Boat Festival at the end of the month. Howard says he might launch his Eun Mara while we're there and I'll meet Michael (MMD) and maybe even see Elly!
Wish you could come, too.

Very pretty boats. A bit high on the finish, to my eye, but handsome.

When I stepped into the uproar that was "The Apprenticeshop" circa 1980 I spent hours just looking at the boats. Lance Lee had helped bring back the craft by promoting workboat finishes. The variety of lapstrake boats was astonishing to someone who'd just driven his Honda Civic from the midwest. The shapes! Peapods, Whitehalls, Crotch Island Pinkies, Tancook Whalers! None of them highly finished.

Salud to him. The place, as a shop, failed after he was fired.

http://www.viking-boats.com/pictures/index.htmThat's a beauty! Ninigret is a very nice boat, one of my favorites, but Mrs. Atkin says John thought it was a difficult boat to build. Doesn't look that tricky to me. <shrug> Maybe it's the details of the enclosed motor well...

but Mrs. Atkin says John thought it was a difficult boat to build.

I buy that, the pictures in the link shows how fine the framing is, which had to be, to keep the weight down.So you would have to take your time and make nice joinery while at the same time making sure everything stayed fair. Kinda more like fine cabinetry work.

It seems to me that the ninigret would be a fantastic boat for someone to consider to set up and build a few in welded aluminum.

John you have done a great job on the Atkin site, I use to browse the old one when there really wasn't anything to browse.A lot of these designs are timeless. And will work as well today as they did 50 years ago and more.

A lot of the Atkin designs, make a lot of designs today for sale by other architects look truely ameaturish.

I think there are quite a few designs that would make very nice electric boats.Wouldn't that be a blast.

Ninigret has been on my "want to build" list for a while now. Certainly a beautiful Atkin design. To my eye, it doesn't look overtly difficult to build. If you want something you can slap together in a few hours, build a pram. A 22' boat in 3 or 4 months of weekends and evenings seems totally acceptable. Your own desire for level of finish can speed it up or extend it infinately. My own way of thinking- Buy a second hand aluminum jonboat and use it to go fishing, etc. while I take my time building the boat I really want to have.

Hi,
I was just looking at another thread when i discovered the Ninigret, a boat that passed overlooked but after I read more about her I discovered that she is a beauty. She is very close than what I was drafting on my own plans but just a little smaller than what I need.
Any idea about pro and cons of scaling up the Ninigret about 15% to reach a LOA around 25 ft and also with the proportional increase of all the other parameters and scantling. (Not just stretching the length).
Also instead of plywood I will consider strip planking.
Speed is not an issue I am not looking for a fast boat but if she can add a few Kts. above the hull speed this will be a plus.
Intended power will be a 40 hp OB. and the boat will be on trailer and stored inside.
Any comment will be greatly appreciated.

Very Nice! That really makes me want to get started on mine. I'm curious though... Looking at the shots where the inside of the boat is visible (a good one is at 4:49), there don't appear to be any frames?? I'd love to see some construction photos.

Now, if only I can get that song out of my head...

Nice. What kind of performance do you achieve with that 60 Yamaha?

Ahh... Looking again, I see now. I haven't come across any photos of others with ceilings. I like the look; nice and clean.

Thanks
