View Full Version : Superstition and old wooden boat parts?

Over the years I've replaced a lot of Sonja's parts, and now have a collection that's getting in the way. I didn't want to burn them for fear of bad JuJu spreading the fire to Sonja herself via osmosis, even though she's stored 60 miles from here.

Call me superstitious, but what's the proper method of disposal that would ensure future safe passage?

Well seasoned small bits of wood with history would also be appreciated by some wood turners/ carvers etc. What sort of stuff are you looking to get rid of? JayInOz

Old floorboards, a few of rotten floors, junk. The pieces of Honduras planking I saved were used to build three half models.

It's a strange feeling, but I think that minutes after all the stuff went on the wood pile I'd get a call from the yard, something about a fire.

Well I just thank my lucky stars that I'm not superstitious! And I never will be- touch wood:) Rich I think you really do have junk and all the mojo has left long ago. Burn it- bury the ashes- grow a tree on 'em:) JayInOz

There's supposed to be bad ju-ju about using wood from a shipwreck in another boat. I built a kingpost and rudder fittings from a wreck into one. Brother is still using her years on.

Since this seems to be a personal superstition, you'll have to come up with a personal solution that feels right to you.

Burn it- bury the ashes- grow a tree on 'em

I second this, although perhaps not the burning part. If they are free of paint or varnish, return them to the earth and complete the cycle.

My superstition appreciates a portion of a past sailing craft to be installed on a new vessel but it must be fastened the moment the rising waxing moon hits your particular horizon give or take a few minutes. This can be dispensed if there are two full moons in one month.|;)

I've used at least a dozen old boats I was working on to heat the shop over the years. They are all still afloat

We have bit's and pieces, but will never have parts of sinkers. We really believe the JuJu is on it. Cant pay us to put it aboard. Still floating 18 years later.

Wood is really different than Clorox bottles. We wont take cursed parts aboard. It is a better idea.

But, do you know her happy when you roll on the waves? When you are going to sleep, you trust her to care, right? This was a longer post, but I was cut short. Love when you post your adventures!

I have one peice of rotten wood that came out looking like an angry voodoo god. We stuck it on a shelf, waiting for the right target for angry voodoo to come along.

Everything else I tossed or burned.

My own house contains and is decorated with parts of my boats I have repaired over the years. I am often accused of living in a nautical museum. The setee in our living room came from the Schooner "Double Eagle". Thank God my wife is a wooden boat lover as well. We are very comfortable and have enough anchors laying about to keep us securely moored in any storm that may come our way!

I have a rib end from the maggie myers in my basement. Once my garage is done and my lathes are set up I am going to turn it into a lamp I think...
