I was contacted the other day about an older trophy that the Royal Canadian found in their stash. Called 'the Bluebottle Trophy', it was named after the 'Royal Dragon' that was a gift from the class to Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip in celebration of their marriage. The trophy was a challenge trophy pitting Dragon sailors from the Southern YC in New Orleans against the Canadians from Toronto. Boy, those were the days, eh?
Anyway, the contact was to see if there was anyone in New Orleans interested in renewing this old rivalry. Well, I asked around but got no interest. The guys at the Southern are more into Melges 32's and the like than they ever would be a Dragon these days. Now that the L16's have all moved to Maine there are no traditional keelboat fleets in New Orleans any more.
This class that I love harbors so much history. It is neat to be able to be a part of this much tradition, but I would sure love to build upon what we have from the past or make our own stories to go along with those that the previous generations have handed down to us.
