tancook whaler (http://www.woodenboat-ubb.com/cgi-bin/UBB/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=2&t=001855&p=)

News flash - for those of us in the area and to those who may be planning a visit to Lunenburg, I have been informed by the staff of the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic that the current project in the boatshop is a traditional form/construction/rig Tancook Whaler. They have completed the lofting and are just setting-up now. The project is expected to last a year or so. Certainly worth a visit to see this lovely traditional hull type take shape. Next time I'm over at the Museum, I'll try to get some pics that are worthy of posting.

What ever happened with this boat?

Also in another thread I thought I read that you were considering drawing a version for modern construction. Am I mistaken? Or was that going to be a Tancook Schooner?

Thanks,

Paul

Hi, Paul;

The boat is going along smoothly, with plans to launch this summer. I'm not sure of the date. Hull is complete, deck is on, and I think the mouldings and trim are near complete. Don't know about the spars yet. I chatted briefly with her builder, Cliff Zwicker, at the Halifax boat show yesterday, but we were both too busy to do much more than exchange pleasantries. I have some research to do at the Museum in the next two weeks, so I'll try to get some pics.

The lines and construction details for the Tancook Whaler are published in Chapele's book "American Smalll Sailing Craft". The boat that I want to draw for modern construction is the Tancook sloop based on "Marilla" that the Maritime Museum launched last summer. There may be a project in the air to create measured, as-fitted drawings of the boat in her traditional carvel construction, too, but it is too early in the process to elaborate.
