Hello, I have a guy that wants me to restore an old wooden boat. I am a plywood and epoxy guy.
The construction, maybe "clinker" planking I am told, on the hull is the only thing bothering me. I know my limitations and I would not be comfortable replacing these types of boards on a 23 foot boat but I feel confident in my ability to restore the decking and cabin.

I have tapped on the hull all the way around and it seems fine and may only need sanding and a fresh coat of something. Is there anything specific I could look for that might signal trouble with the hull or should I sand down to bare wood and inspect or what?

I know! I know! I am a "wet behind the ears," "land lubbin'," ROOKIE! but.....

Help if you can,

Bud

I'm a rookie as well. Why not have a professional survey the boat and have him point out problem areas?

That is probably a good idea but the logistics get complicated.

There are some areas of the boat you simply can't tap to sound for rot. Keel, some frames, Stern post, forefoot - some of these areas may be hidden or partially hidden.

Also, rot is not the only problem. Bad or watsed fasteners might lurk unfound throughout the boat.

What kind of boat is it?

Some boats have typical trouble spots (lots don't). Tell us what type of boat you are looking at & maybe someone can better comment (design, builder, length, power or sail, & age, etc. will help).
