View Full Version : A new Frank Gehry building

I just read an interesting piece in The New Yorker about a new high rise in Manhattan, at 8 Spruce Street.

Google led me to a forum where the project has been the subject of discussion since the developer first started shopping for the site back in '03:

That should take you to page 314 of the thread but if you like architecture and discussions thereof go back to page one.

Maybe someone will come along who knows how to bring one of the pictures of the building here. That person ain't me!

Here's an abstract of The New Yorker article: http://www.newyorker.com/arts/critics/skyline/2011/03/07/110307crsk_skyline_goldberger

Gehry's work has tended to get stylized for the sake of style. His work as a designer has become subordinate to his work as a stylist.

The close-up shots make the thing look gauche but from a distance I really like it. More importantly, the folks in NYC (90% anyway) seem to like it. The biggest complaints seem to be coming from the people who live in the neighborhood who have grown tired of the disruptions due to the construction.

Compared to the Bilbao museum and the Disney concert hall I'd say Mr. Gehry is making progress. ;)

One can hardly fault a Fiesta for not being an F350 - the buildings you compare had different design (and stylistic) requirements. I doubt one could, even if one wanted to, get a Bilbao building on a similar footprint as Spruce Street while having enough sq. footage to make it pay.

I really like what he did in Dussledorf (first two pics):
