update.....BRASILIA (Reuters) – Since taking office on New Year's Day, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff has told a procession of surprised American visitors over coffee that she wants to end a decade of mistrust and build a new strategic alliance with the United States.
The shift, which initially shocked U.S. and Brazilian diplomats, is behind President Barack Obama's hastily planned visit to Brazil this week. Both sides see a historic chance to bring the Western Hemisphere's two heavyweights closer together with major implications for energy, trade and defense.
The issues that pushed the two apart -- trade disputes, Brazil's growing clout in global affairs and its ties with Iran and other anti-U.S. governments -- haven't gone away.

Phillip as it is March 17th.. I sense "boyo" is closer to a term of endearment in NYC.

boy could just as easily be a term of endearment...racial prejudgment knows no bounders...or maybe it does

the point is simple boy or boyo are basically the same word...it's what "we" choose to be offended by that offends us

sometimes, as in the current example, others choose what is to offend us

S.V. Airlie
03-17-2011, 10:10 AM
If the term "boy" is used, I can usually tell the difference from the rest of the message Phillip...It is how it is used in the context with the rest of the comment.

example: a guy comes in the garage where I was just helping out..not an emplyee. He comes in a black caddy with a 20 dollar cigar clamped in his teeth. He rolls down the automatic window and shouts "hey boy, come here!" I walk over and he asks for directions to the Baseball Hall of Shame which was basically two blocks away. I did not like his attitude but hey..okay directions.. I gave him directions that took him 25 miles out of his way to essentially go two blocks. I'm sure he was pissed...

you may say so but that is not how it is practiced

25 years ago I used to meet with several professors for breakfast on a regular basis.
I came in one morning and all these women proffs were seated around a couple of tables pushed together.
"Goon morning, Ladies" I said. I was immediately attacked for "slighting" those women, for speaking "down" to them. "what am I supposed to say?" I asked and was told that they were "women" ... okay
the next morning I came in and said "good morning, women" and continued after that no matter how silly it sounded...there were flinches but no corrections thereafter. (one was an English proff)
