I know it is small potatoes next to the tragedy in Japan, but will they have to make new charts? Reprogram GPS? Etc.

Yes, there will be adjustments made for navigation and time. Japan moved 8' to the east and the earth is spinning a little faster.

Eh?

We were lucky here when the quake hit our Port, there was a Navy survey ship in the area. Port and harbour were quickly checked and cleared for use.

Japan has had 600km of coast affected.....

I should think that with GPS and sonar some how linked together that it would be relatively easy to survey or re-survey a coast line.

I've been thinking of the problem of land titles. I wouldn't mind betting that in some of the older communities there is no formal survey of land that has been occupied for centuries. Now with some of it under water (Honshu dropped by 2 feet I think) and most of it covered in wreckage how will they determine property boundaries?
