Hi, I just wanted to show the version of the Melon Seed from Chapelle's American Small Craft p 209 that I'm working on. I adapted the design to 9mm stitch and glue okume plywood. I had to modify the first 3 frames as the shape was not possible in sheet materiel of any thickness. A 1/4 scale model helped me find the answer that I would never have found otherwise. This unconventioal approach involves the joint between the bottom and middle planks dropping as it goes forward from frame #5 rather then rising with the sheer line. In fact it's less of an abrupt transition than it might seem. I also eliminated the flat bottom keel plank and made the rear sections more consistent to eachother. I will set it up with a yoke and rudder lines running forward to a control stick so all the lines and steering are up front. The original had rudder lines and this design looks like the weight should be upfront which is not possible with a tiller. I hope to get it in the water this fall.

Please note the new web site, this time all the links work, my apologies.

Phil, looks good to me, very thoughtful adaptation of a classic. What advantages of stich and glue construction got you started on this approach? Will it bring down the weight?
Liked your extensive and wide-ranging website. Your father was in pro musica -- I'm impressed. Have any of their lps been reissued on CD? Keep us posted on the progress of the melonseed.

Hey Phil,
The New Jersey Melonseed is one of my favorite designs. It looks like you're off to a good start on an interesting concept.

Have you seen Sam Devilin's Stitch and glue version of the 'seed. He calls it Zephyr.
