The people of Tunisia are taking back their country.

They are tossing out yet another government tied to the old regime. They are doing so without firing a shot, and yesterday, the guys with the guns switched to their side. American libertarians, take note.

Take note also that there were street protests in Algeria and Yemen yesterday, and that people are setting themselves on fire in Egypt and Saudi Arabia - the revolution in Tunisia started with a man setting himself on fire.

Take note that reviled al Jazeera is covering all this intensively and broadcasting it all over the Arab world. Take note that Muhammed el Baradei, so hated by those American who wanted to bring democracy to the Middle East, may yet succeed where they failed, and in a much more central Arab nation.

Take note that democracy and freedom come not from bombardment and invasion, but from within. Good luck to the people of Tunisia. They will need it in the years ahead.

I should imagine George that there will be many in power in the US and it's allies who will not welcome this development and any knock on effects. The status quo may not be ideal but they know where the power lies and have spent much cspital in buying influence. A break out of 'democratic choice' amongst the oil states would render the past few years adventures by the west more of a liability than they are already. Not to say that one repressive regime will not be replaced by another, power once obtained has proven a very addictive drug.
Good fortune indeed to the people of Tunisia, I wonder what's being said in the Eleese Palace.

All proper points, George. Let us pray our president does not fall for our usual imperialistic idiocy.
