Has the PNW chapter had an EBS lately, if not why not. I sure could use one. Anyone?

One.

A few of us got together back around the holidays, pretty informal. Apologies, oversights meant no general call for brew was issued on these pages. If you call one and I'm around, I will make it.

I guess I posted too close to the super bowl. Gerard I see you are just south of me, easy enough to meet for a beer somewhere. Lew, John, I'm still open. Or I'll try again in a week or 2.

Where will it be? If anyone wants to make the drive to Anacortes, I have several interesting old boats hauled right now. . . a shop tour before/during/contiguous with the whiskey sampling?

Alright, alright . . . . now I'm jealous.
A boat yard is a good place.

James, that is a very interesting offer. I would love to get some photos of that tug and anything else you are working on. I would be willing to offer a bottle of Jameson to the cause. :D

That sounds like a good time. I haven't been to the hardware store in forever either. I see they have a deal going in the deck prism department. Beers, boats and bronze? Sounds good to me.

Okay then, I'm officially offering to host this thing and inviting y'all to come to Emerald Marine for a shin-dig. :) Just tell me the time that works for everybody and I'll make it happen. I'll invite the guys from the Anacortes Community Maritime Center to come too, and maybe we can plan a messabout or something for the Spring while we're at it.

Swinging from the rafters, check.
Hey, it could be as early as this saturday, or maybe next friday or saturday? Since I'm the only one within reasonable walking distance from home, I think you guys who are driving ought to be the ones to say for sure.

01-27-2011, 10:30 AM
Hey Bill! It would be great to see you there, or elsewhere!
I can't make it this weekend. I can make it next weekend.
Too bad Bruce isn't around. He is a fun guy - and a good swimmer :)

I’ve been told this Sunday is booked, and that Valentines weekend is on reserve. Shoot for next Saturday and see what happens.

James, plan that something for after March, okay? The ferry from Vancouver Island to Anacortes doesn't start up again until April - I'm sitting here on the wrong side of the water for this one.

Jamie, we'll do more than one for sure. Plus, I just got my NEXUS application approved so I'll be walking aboard and showing up on your doorstep there in Sidney at some point sooner rather than later. :D
But for this first one? How about. . .
Next Saturday, Feb. 5th at 3:00 starting at Emerald Marine. . .and perhaps staggering down towards the Brown Lantern or the Rockfish after a bit. PM me for directions if you need 'em.

Excellent! I've invited a few guys from OARSS and TSCA and the ACMC to come as well--and i look forward to maybe brainstorming our summer schedule of messabouts. I know there's a springtime Cama Beach rendezvous possibly in the works.
Bring your boat plans and your pictures!

Also, if anybody wants to car pool up from Seattle (Eric and I have discussed that but that depends on if he can go) I can take 3 other people in my VW, or 4 in my Chevy. I am just as happy to ride with somebody else doing the driving, but either way there's little point in everyone driving up from here in separate cars. What do you think?
Hey Bill! I hope you can make it. It's been a while! If you want to ride up with me, give me a PM or email.

James,
Not sure what you have planned for munchies, if any, for this event:
I can bring brats / rolls / condiments if there is a grill available (if this idea is appropriate). If no grill and you want to do the brats, I can bring my Trusty George Foreman electric grill.
Lew, I'll call you on Thursday - I may work Saturday morning at Beacon Hill -

'Kay boys, I'm headed to Costco tonight to pick up a 50# sack of tortilla chips and the 5 gallon bucket of salsa for the fiesta. Anyone need anything?
Bill, Lew, by all means bring yer munchies too. We can fire up a grill, sure! Or whatever. Open to suggestions.
Ummm. . . .we are a bit short of lemon-scented towellettes--this being a boatshop after all, and also those little miniature parasols for the drinks if anyone has extra to bring.
James McMullen
02-04-2011, 09:57 AM
Oh, and you're certainly free to bring your wife/girfriend/significant other if you want. We can race 'em to see who gets bored hearing about lap gains and bedding compound and caulking bevels first. (I gotta warn you, Kate's got a bit of a homefield advantage on this one already! :D)

That should work then. I'm hoping to get a deckhand job on a schooner currently in the Bahamas. They'll be back in port tomorrow. I have a job offer from the company I worked for last summer though, and they need to know if I'm coming back by Monday. Not much time to figure out where I'm headed. A schooner would be more fun then another summer of jetboats though.
And a great time was had by all.

Prove it.
I have them. What's it worth to ya?
Actually, I will get them up tonight as I have some work that takes me away from home today.
Here's a brief recap though without images which will follow:
1. Best Cookies Award goes to the Beckmans for their "Norwegian Lace" butter discs.
2. Best Shop tool goes to Emerald's 36" ship saw
3. Best fiberglass boat imitating a wooden boat goes to......(wait.......... can't give all the awards out at once)
It was a pretty good sized EBS, with at minimum 25 or 30 people in attendance even including some women and children!
We didn't run out of beer!
The lasagna was not as good as the one served at the last EBS.
James gimbaled stove holder remains a marvel of crude elegance.
The worm drive saw was not in sight.
Stand by for film at 7.

OK, just guessing here, but the way I feel this morning and looking at the photos, I had a good time and I’m sure I made a fool of myself. Thank you James and Andy for hosting us. My attitude is now suitably adjusted and I will make it thru the rest of winter.

Looked like a good time, James never showed me the loft area when I've been at his shop. Must be where he cat naps during the day!

That was a great party, guys! Thanks to all for coming!
I got to meet some unfamiliar faces with very familiar screen names--I love that! And the company and the conversation and the food and the beverages were all most congenial. I think that the Nutella-infused hazelnut brownies were unbelievable, but Beckman's cookies were certainly in the running for Best of Show.
The first round of party supplies barely fit on the ol' cargo bike. I had to pump up my tires!:

We were able to definitively answer the question of whether size really matters:

And (shocker!) we actually had real live cute girls show up at a party fulla old guys blathering on about boats. No kidding. Proof here:

I wanted to come to the EBS on Saturday, but I had a work/writing gig keep me busy from the early morning hours well into the evening. Here's a photo. It was a video that we're doing for a giant company. I'd say more, but hey, this is a thread about drinking beer with boat nerds.

I'm sorry that this probably means you won't get to come adventuring by sail 'n oar with us so much this summer, but I guess I can see how you would be willing to trade Eric and Tim's company for a buncha Bahamas bikini babes. Can you leave us that cookie recipe before you go at least?

Norwegian Oatmeal Lace Cookies
2 dozen
½ cup butter
1 cup oats
1 egg
2/3rd cup sugar
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tbsp. all-purpose flour
Melt the butter in a small saucepan and stir in the oatmeal. Beat egg until foamy with the sugar.
Mix together the baking powder and flour and stir into the egg mixture along with the oatmeal mixture.
Drop batter, 1 level tablespoon at a time onto greased and floured baking sheets, 2-3” apart.
Bake at 375°F for 6½-7 minutes or until golden brown. Watch carefully.
Place baking sheets on wire racks to cool, about 1 minute (cookies should still be hot and flexible, but cooled until firm enough to move). Quickly lift cookies with a spatula; drape them over a horizontal broomstick covered with foil; press gently into saddle shape. (If cookies harden and stick to pan, return to oven until softened.)
When cool, lift off broomstick. Store airtight at room temperature 2 or 3 days; freeze for longer storage. Makes about 2 dozen.
